there is a set of Ansermet, his friend, which is better, cheaper.
I will say that i think his work has more relavance to Microtonality than the other european cul de sacs.
and on top of it, he actually had a soul

***Yes, I like his music too. This CD has _Symphony of Psalms_ and
_Symphony in 3 Movements_ on it with Stravinsky conducting.

I think I've heard much better performances of these pieces. They
seem kind of like a "diamond in the rough" with factors like balance
not really fully developed.

But, since Stravinsky only conducted his *own* music, I'm not sure he
had full "conductor's chops..."

***I was meaning, Paul, whether people liked the way he did it! :)

Better go back to math, Paul... :)

i guess i haven't done enough comparison of various really old
recordings of the same stravinsky piece to have an opinion on
this . . . i just thought that the entire body of your post
being "comments?" looked suspicious . . .

***My problem, Paul, is that I can't seem to remember the recordings
I've heard! I know that, when a student and over the years, I've
heard *much* better performances of these Stravinsky pieces, but, at
the time, I thought *performance* didn't matter so much compared to
*composition*...(!)

Pooh...

Now I find out, many, many years later, that the visions of the
pieces I had in my head in several cases were influenced by splendid
performances, and I can't seem to find them again.

This also happened to the Berlioz _Damnation of Faust_ which I
learned from a splendid recording, and I can never find its equal.

If I knew what I know now, I would have remembered the performances
for sure!

I have actually been quite surprised at how well Daniel Barenboim conducts igor. his Sym of Psalms actually has
brought me to tears.
Boelez does a good sym for winds instruments. Igor could bring a unique view to his work though

maybe the "visions" of the pieces you had in your head were created
partially in your head from the score?

this was the case for me with the beatles song _here, there, and
everywhere_. i had heard *some* beatles songs, and i had the sheet
music for this one, so i imagined it a certain way. when i finally
heard the actual recording, i was very disappointed, the beatles'
rendition was so wimpy!

***Sure. The tempos are enlightening. I'm sure they are what he
meant. Whether he really wanted the balance as rough as that, or
whether he just didn't know *how* to balance (or didn't really care)
is another matter. It's had to judge when the *first* recordings I
learned and was used to were by somebody else...

Very often a piece will get better with age too since more people conduct it and others can here what they do.
