>(was it Wendy Carlos who said it?) a criticism of
Partch, that for all his JI tuning, he really missed giving it its' full
beauty because he used such percussive, quick decaying timbres.

Hmm, he started using percussion only in his late forties when body
feeling/Corporeality rose in importance. The Adapted Viola settings such as Li Po,
the Adapted Guitar pieces, and works that use the Chromelodeon more (eg Sonata
Dementia, Greek Studies) give the ear plenty of time to hear the relationships.
These earlier works have tended to get lost in the clatter of the later,
better-know pieces though.

Partch's 17-limit tonality diamond that he gave to Ben Johnston reproduced. The
book is out of print; if you find it it won't be cheap. A school library
might help.

Don't forget you can play the Partch instruments on line and perfectly tuned
