From the Yahoo Jazz Guitar Group (YJGG) Moderators

Hi YJGG Members

Well as you may know we ran out of space in our files
section and so we started another Yahoo group to archive our
files - jazz_guitar_files.

Over the week we've been hard at work to free up more file
space and have moved over more files from the file section
to our new file archive group. Our new File archive group
can be found here:

/jazz_guitar_files/

We encourage all our members to join this new group which
acts as our file store (you will get no additional messages
from this new group). Some of the files we've moved over
include, the Pat Metheny lessons, W.Leavitt's Chord Melody
Arrangements, Ike Isaacs Guitar Columns.

In moving files over we found out that Yahoo has recently
split file storage between Files and Photos. Files gets 20
MB, Photos 30 MB. Therefore where possible it is best to
post Photos rather than Files. Photos can be JPEG (.jpg) or
GIF (.gif) file formats. Yahoo has also a new ActiveX
component or a plug-in which allows you to upload and
download multiple photos making the process much easier. So
if you have transcriptions or files and can make them into
images it would be best to place them in the photo section.
To convert and print images we recommend the program
Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/

New Files and messages should be placed in the existing group:

/jazz_guitar/

Thanks to everyone for making the group one of the best (and
free) jazz guitar community destinations on the web. Keep up
the great posts and continue to make this one of the best
places to find out about everything related to jazz guitar.

***Of course, this is a good idea, and I *thought* that was what
Robert Walker was doing when he set up the "pointer" group for all
the Yahoo tuning groups. However, for some reason, he didn't want
files stored over there, so somebody should start a new one. Paul,
why don't you go ahead, since it's your idea, unless somebody
objects?? You seem to be online here a fair amount, so you won't
be "in absentia" like our present "moderator..."

Good show. Of course, there was always the possibility of exploring
the use of the "Photos" directory, which has to have a pretty big
quota on it, since it is for binaries.

Ahhh, key sentence, that one. Notice how they have *moderators*? Active ones (no slam at Mark N. at all, just reality). So there's now more space, and everyone is happy.

Of course, with no one overseeing all this, the kids will just throw their toys around the room, leaving a mess until everything is full. And then someone will open up another group, etc.

Basically a great idea. But no one around here ever seems to want to do the dirty work of making things easy to find, writing up web pages with current links and explanation, group similar research together, etc.

Everybody is too busy doing research, etc.

Who is moderator for the new group? You, Paul? Then, with those priviledges, I *know* you'll keep things in order and organized, right???

Cheers,
Jon

no different from what occurs on the jazz guitar group or any other
group i'm on.

sad, that. if someone would plant the seed, though, i have a feeling
it would grow.

how about this -- everyone who wants to add files must create their
own folder in the files directory, and then whatever they want to do
within that folder is up to them.

i just thought it was time to answer the problem, which several
people by now have had, of no file space. the idea being that when
you make a post, you can have a supporting document or image easily
accessible to the reader of the post. i don't see why all of a sudden
there should be someone imposing order on all this :)

Oh, that makes perfectly good sense.

Use your brain. I'm not being fetishistically order-oriented just for the sake of it, but have you forgotten the recent bit about files uploaded by someone not on the list any more and no one being able to delete them? *That* is why having one or two more co-moderators would allow some oversight in this matter.

But it still baffles me: for a group of people that find such delight in the details, and will argue for weeks over the smallest of info-bits - for that to all get lost in a miasma of uncollated flotsam and scattered random postings seems, well, dumb.

Cheers,
Jon

By the way, I hope we are still backing up this group. Yahoo could
cancel it at any time, with no notice.

Why is it always the ubiquitous "we"? Why does no one ever say "Hey, I can't stand the thought of a world without the tuning list archives, so I've got a complete copy on my hard drive of individual/digest messages, and can burn a CD at any point for anyone."?

Me? I've got a nearly complete copy of all the messages, but for the life of me I'm not really sure why. Just a/r, I guess.

Cheers,
Jon

i thought robert walker did say that, or something like it.

I don't say it because I can't even organize by closet.

Yep, in a somewhat more convoluted manner. Maybe someone should just approach him directly. Besides, Google, at least as it stands right now, has most of the (net) world archived.

Jon

Fair enough. But if everyone has the same excuse, there is no sense even giving it a second thought.

I love Robert Walker to death, for all the good-willed software development he has done for the tuning community; nonetheless, the list database/archive was unworkable.

Organize by closet: clothes in the clothes closet, linens in the linen closet, etc. Should be easy, Gene. :)

Jon

***I believe the "quotas" don't go by *directory* but by the total

they go by directory.
