What is megamid? (newbie question)

Thanks very much to everyone who responded to my "What is Scala" question a
while back. I am now playing with Scala quite happily, and will continue to
do so while I (slowly) get more proficient.

But what is Megamid?

During the installation of Scala, the "Megamid" icon appeared on my desktop.
I haven't dared click on it because I don't know what it is or what it does,
and I don't want anything I'm unsure about fiddling with my machine's sound
card or midi settings. On the other hand, I haven't dared uninstall it, in
case doing so stops Scala from working. So it's just sitting there, doing
nothing.

So, could someone please tell me what this strange little icon is for? Why
is it there? Why do I need it? Do I even need it at all? Will it mess up my
Windows settings? Will it interfere with Cakewalk (my sequencer)?

...and all those sort of things...

Thanks,

Jill

It's for playing MIDI files. It's possible to use Cakewalk instead, but I never worked out how to get Cakewalk to load and play a file when it (Cakewalk) is already running.

So you mean it's just another alternative to Windows Media Player then?
In other words, I don't need Megamid at all, and can safely uninstall it
without screwing Scala?

I was rather hoping Manuel could clarify this for me, since he knows what
Scala does or does not need, but if all it is is a midi player then I guess
I can ignore it.

However - if it is just a midi player then I'm don't think it's particularly
"nice" that Scala auto-installs it. Anyone who's already GOT a midi player
(i.e. everyone who's got Windows) may prefer to carry on using the one
they've got. I may have got that wrong though. Maybe megamid is more "fully
featured" than Media Player. Maybe Media Player can't do microtonal tuning.
I don't know. Sorry to be a pain, I'm just very confused.

Manuel? Help?

I don't think it gets installed, it just gets an icon put onto the
desktop, which is harmless, since you can trash it.

It gives you something to look at. I wouldn't bother with it if you
are happy.

***Actually MegaMid has an intriguing *visual* interface that mostly
does nothing, but looks really great. Manuel just packed this into
Scala as a "favor..." A little extra treat that one can delete...
