bad news from mp3.com

Starting Jan. 31, mp3.com is only going to let "Premium" or "Gold"
artist sites display more than three "songs..."

This affects Tuning Punks, the Tuning Lab and personal pages.

Well, the "free ride" on the Internet is surely coming to an end.

It's not clear as yet what will be offered in their "Gold" services
for about $5 per month. Might do it. "Premium" is like $15 per mo.

Hope John Starett keeps the Tuning Punks running for this $50 per
year...

Don't know if I'll be able to keep "Tuning Lab" up after that... I
have two *other* artist pages I want to keep up...

Why don't we set up our own web site for music?

Indeed.

***Well, Jon Szanto already has done that on www.microtonal.org.

The problem is that nobody seems to have the equipment set up to
*stream* adequately... and nobody really wants to wait for
downloads... at least I'm speaking for *myself...*

Jon, is what is the policy at microtonal.org, and how does one set up a web page?

It is what it is. :) (that's a comment on your typo...)

I gotta jet off to work, so I'll post a note on your question later tonight...

Cheers,
Jon

microtonal.org is a domain that I registered to facilitate easy downloading of mp3 files for the members of the Making Microtonal Music forum. We saw repeatedly that people were having trouble downloading larger files (as most mp3s are) from the Yahoo! Groups file areas. I popped a few bucks for a cheap hosting service, designed a few basic pages, and allowed people to submit files.

The space is certainly not unlimited, so I keep track of how much is used and put files up in a FIFO order. That way if I have to make room for a new piece the oldest piece gets dumped.

Bear in mind that this is downloading only (which Joe P. doesn't like) - there is no streaming of mp3 files. I do believe that the only sites that can accomodate that are sites that have builtin mp3 streaming servers/software. I have not checked hosting services that offer this as an option to basic web hosting, but I imagine they exist. I also imagine that they are not free.

I'm keeping the site for the members of that group, to share their work with fellow members of that group, and to discuss any of the work on the MMM list. If someone wants to do a similar site for the main tuning list, I'll be happy to give pointers. It is really not hard at all, especially compared to constructings lattices. :)

Cheers,
Jon
