hello all,

i've been busy all weekend doing lots of updates
to definitions in the Tuning Dictionary.

perhaps the most significant update is in the
12edo definition:
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/dict/12-eq.htm

i've included lots of vector math, showing the derivation
of 12edo by tempering out the Pythagorean comma, and also
showing its kinship with 1/11-comma meantone, and its
function as a schismic tuning.

i know most people on this list are wanting to get
away from 12edo, but it's historically important, and
this shows some of the math behind the reasons why.

The remarkable thing about 12 edo is how many different ways it can be interpreted. we could add
Yasser's series of 5+7 =12 also as significant. That it is so low numbered and flexible makes it
hard to beat. In the end, we may find that the mathematical explanation may be endless. Like all
good symbols, a condensation of a myriad of dynamic forces.

right you are, Kraig. 12 is indeed a "magic number"
for many countable things, even outside of music, and
has been for a very long time.
