Sure. The moderator simply goes into the members area and unsubscribes them, or if you're really sure you can 'ban' them, which means they are unsubscribed and can't rejoin.

Nothing, of course, can stop people from rejoining under an a new name/email and spamming again. There have also been a few - fortunately very few - automated spam attacks on the Yahoo mailing lists.

Mark, are you out there?

Cheers,
Jon

Talking of unsuscribing, I asked to be unsuscribed and I haven't :o(((

Thanks.

I don't know what the problem is: every single message or digest has all the information for you to unsubscribe! YOU have to do it, no one can do it FOR you. I've copied the link below for your information:

Note that you probably have to send the email from the address that you subscribed from...

Another effective technique is to have every new list subscriber approved by the list moderator, but it is additional work. On another list I subscribe to in Yahoo, the moderator asks that you send him a line listing some of the products you use/own for the particular manufacturers' list, prior to approval. This eliminated spam on that list, as well as the harvesting of email addresses.

***Hello Eddy,

Actually, of all the "problems" that people have been having with the
Yahoo sites, most of which concern the ads that PAY for it, SPAM has
not been one of them. A search through the 4 years or so archive
will confirm this. Yahoo must have pretty good filters for this.

best,

J. Pehrson

Within 3 days, the same source posted bona fide spam to the list. It bothered someone. It isn't egregious to ask the list owner to look into it, because if there is one thing about spam, it's that a little of it leads to a lot.

Cheers,
Jon

Hi:

I am new to the Tunings list, so I cannot speak about the frequency of spam here, and consequently it has not bothered me personally : - ). I was responding to someone's question about possible solutions to a recent spam posting on this list.

On a related note: another list I subscribe to just relocated away from Yahoo because of spam in various forms and techniques, so it does exist as a problem in Yahoo, plus the other list with the additional screening done by the moderator I mentioned before. If your general statement about people and no problems with spam at Yahoo refers to this list only, I hope this continues to be the case here. But it has happened frequently in other forums at Yahoo, and hence we are not immune here, maybe blessed.

perhaps most of the potential spammers take a look
at a few of the messages to get a feel for the spam
they might want to send to the tuning list, and when
they see what we're talking about, they have no idea
what the f*** it is and just go elsewhere.

***Hi Eddy!

Why, sure. I was only talking about the Tuning List and its
associated "sister lists..." I think at the most there have only
been a couple of SPAM postings each month, at most.

Having been a "partial moderator" (I forget my actual title) for one
of the Yahoo lists ("Crazy Music") I found that Yahoo really has an
incredible number of possible settings that apply to each
participant, in addition to *blocking.* Their interface,
particularly in regard to Web usage, really seems quite
sophisticated. (Better than any other I have yet seen).

Of course, this all assumes that the list moderator is actually
*reading* the list, which in the case of Mark Nowitzsky of *this*
particular list, is not necessarily a "given..."

best,

Joe Pehrson
