Frank Oteri of the American Music Center has included a little
profile of yours truly on his NewMusicBox site.

It involves my use of the Sibelius program to implement microtonality.

Enjoy...

Congratulations Joseph! Frank Oteri did a little
feature on me too, last year, when my music drama From
The realm Of The Shadow came out (Naxos 8.559089-90, 2
CDs, see www.fromtherealmoftheshadow.com). Frank Oteri
is deeply interested in alternative tunings and
actually composed a 31 note to the octave opera. My
piece sounds really traditional most of the way, but
has a 19 note to the optave section near the end as
well as a 34-note to the octave oud playing a
middle-eastern inspired piece in 21/8 time (that's the
part he excerpted). I guess as a composer I went
straight from the 18th-19th century styles to the 21st
century, and skipped the 20th almost entirely. Weird.
I'm glad Sibelius works for you; I guess I should make
the investment in it myself for my upcoming 53 note to
the octave oratorio. By the way, the sounds I plan to
use are with Gigastudio, which allows microtonal
tunings but only very grudglingly. I'll have to put in
300,000 manual commands just to get Garritan Strings
into the system in 53-equal! Arrgh. BUT, version 3.0
is coming out, and they're considering creating the
ability to generate custom tuning macros somehow.
A favor I'm asking anyone and everyone. Even if you're
not into Gigastudio, could you ask if they are
considering a microtonal music feature for their
digital sampling software?
Thanks, and kudos again!

***Hi Chris!

Thanks for your congratulations. I received an e-mail from Frank
Oteri asking that people write to the Giga-los on your behalf, so I
did that! I don't know if they *really* believe I am about to
purchase the product, but I tried to sound convincing. :)

Hope they do more about the microtonal implementation -- that goes
for the Sibelius folks, too!

best,

Joseph
