dumping on Scala with korg N5

Hi there, this is Alex, I've installed Scala about two weeks ago and
I'm still having problems sending the Scales to my synthesizer. Now
I'm looking for help on this message groups :)

I got a korg N5, now I don't know much about how scala sends the
scales to the synths, I set the synth to MIDI Standard Tuning and
nothing happened. I'm not a MIDI genius and I still didn't figure out
completely how the sysex messages work on this process of sending and
importing the scales.

Do I have to know all about sysex and program my own messages so I
can re-tune my keyboard, can you help with any information or
redirect me somewhere so I can find out if I have limits on N5, or if
I have to do something special so it can work with Scala?

Thanks a bunch

***Hello Alex,

I believe that, first, you have to determine if SCALA supports the
Korg N5. Are you absolutely certain that it can be tuned by the MIDI
Tuning Standard? Not all synths can be tuned this way with SCALA.

Providing you have the correct synth selected (I didn't see the M5)
you should be able to create a MIDI file for your synth simply by
going:

SEND/FILE filename.mid (name your file, obviously and use a .mid
extension)

Then you play this file at a very slow tempo (16 beats per measure
for the TX81Z) and the tuning tables will change to reflect the MIDI
tuning data in your .mid file.

The person to ask is the inventor, Manuel Op de Coul, who is usually
on this list but may be out of town at the moment.

I can send you his e-mail address if you inquire directly off list.

Good luck. SCALA works great with the TX81Z and is a great mind and
ear-opener!

best,

Joseph Pehrson

***Sorry, Alex. I suddenly notice that all of this has been answered
on the MakeMicroMusic list, where it belongs, by none other than
Manuel Op de Coul himself!

ha ha :), well, I appreciate it anyway, thanks a lot
for the intent, and I was talking to the guy and I had
no idea that he was the one who invented the software,
that was interesting to know...

Anyway, 12 notes tuning won't be enough in a while, so
besides working with the N5 I'm thinking what's the
best optios to work with full tunings, I understand
the yamaha tx81z is a sound module, not a keyboard,
right? It's good to know it works well with it, I'll
try and look around here in Brazil, but it might be
too expensive for me now...

I've just downloaded some soft synths like pro-52 /
reaktor / Vaz and I hope I'll be able to do something
with it, I hope it's easy, do you know anyhting about
those?

Cheers
Alex

***Hello Eric,

Well, as far as the *expense* of the TX81Z there is no problem. You
can get one used for as little as $150 and they're all over the
place, at least here in the US. I have two of them.

Of course, it's hardly a "state of the art" device, but it has some
marvellous bell sounds that, when processed, are truly amazing.

best,

Joe Pehrson
