_Blacklight_ .mp3 and score online

🔗jpehrson2 <jpehrson@rcn.com>

My new piece _Blacklight_ in the Blackjack scale for cello and
electronics is now online:

It's *finally* appeared on mp3.com:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2526/2526344.html

And the score is in the files folder:

/tuning/files/Pehrson/

So, why did I put the score in MS Word??

Well, I couldn't make a .pdf from Sibelius since the Mook accidentals
were an unsupported PostScript font. The .pdf software "rebelled..."

But the Word version (actually created from .emf files) works quite
well, if you have it enlarged enough on the screen. Or, even better
yet, just print out the fairly short score. This works.

Since we're running out of file space in our Files area, I deleted
something else even *larger* I had there to make room for it.

It should be possible, with the sound file and the score, of course,
to do some kind of "analysis" of the piece, if anybody's
interested... with reference to moving around on the Blackjack
lattice...

I will enjoy and appreciate any comments, no matter how negative... :)

Thanks!

Joseph

it didn't. i think i'll need to install all your fonts first, or
something?

since you posted this both here and to makemicromusic, i'll respond
there . . .

***D*mn! What are you getting?? Music at all *without* the Mook
accidentals, or something weird in front of the notes??

That's funny, since it's been saved as a graphic file...

Oh, oh... Do you have a PostScript printer??

i would think so . . . but this is a .doc file, isn't it? word is
clearly trying to read the accidentals in terms of some font, but it
sure ain't the right one . . . you should see the wacky symbols i'm
getting . . . i've never seen anything like them . . .

Joe,

Jon here...

It has not been saved as a graphic file, as far as I can tell. Even in the opening 'notes to the performer' section, the accidentals are coming out as large lowercase letters, probably picking some font other than what you intend since it relies on the fonts. Either it was saved without embedding the fonts or... I'm not sure what else.

> Oh, oh... Do you have a PostScript printer??

Very few people outside of an office environment - and a graphics-oriented one at that - will have access to a PostScript printer, though there are 3rd-party apps that will translate. I found one and installed it to print out the curriculum book that Paul had pointed out last year on Math and Music.

But, hey, this isn't going to stop me from listening to the piece once it's finished downloading!

Cheers,
Jon

it says "there are only two different interval sizes in Blackjack";

i think you should say instead

"there are only two different setp sizes in Blackjack"

since Blackjack actually has 41 different interval sizes (mod the
octave)!

Is that right? I thought Blackjack had 31 interval sizes, and Canasta 41.
Always the number of the next highest MOS.

nope, it's 41 . . . see

xt

> Always the number of the next highest MOS.

apparently, not! another example: the pentatonic scale has 9 interval
sizes mod the octave:

1. unison
2. major second
3. minor third
4. major third
5. perfect fourth
6. perfect fifth
7. minor sixth
8. major sixth
9. minor seventh

the reason for these results is clear: for an mos, the number of
interval *classes* is obviously equal to the number of notes (think
*chain*); multiply by 2 and subtract 1 for the number of interval
sizes mod the octave (since each interval class comes in two
inversions mod the octave, except the unison).

the diatonic scale actually has 13 interval sizes, in any tuning
other than 12-equal, since the augmented fourth and the diminished
fifth are distinct.

***Whoopsie! boo boo

Thanks, Paul, for proofing this! I will make that correction!

****Hi Paul...

Well, I *thought* I was putting a big .emf graphic on each page, but
apparently it *still* needs to be reading the Mook font in order for
it to work. D*mn!

Of course, for anybody wanting to go to the trouble, the Mook font is
here:

https://www.mindeartheart.org/micro.html

And you'll also need the *free* Adobe Type Manager Light in order to
install the PostScript font:

http://www.adobe.com/products/atmlight/main.html

Or, better yet, you can just sit back and, hopefully, *enjoy* the
piece, which is what it's all about...

Will be better though with a "real" cellist rather than a hokey synth
line!

***Well, that's probably the best solution, unless somebody wants to
take the time to install the Mook font. It's a "Mook" point at this
stage...
