The Gongs

Hi- I'm in band called the Gongs, and we are going to be touring the country
this summer with Momus, and a few others on the American Patchwork label.
Although not blatently so, all our music demonstrates a complete
lack of 12tet- the instruments are all self-made, and tuned to various
things- a lot of 7tet, but including just intoned intervals and a little
bit of straight out arbitrary.

To get more info, and to look at all our instruments that we will be
using, check out
http://www.oberlin.edu/~chlatham

We'd appreciate attention from the tuning community, since we are trying
to bridge many styles and philosophies with our music...

Thanks,
Peter

Yeeoooh, Peter! Looks like a good thing, and you'll get an Honorary
Mention on the official Harry Partch site (http://www.corporeal.com/
as soon as I cobble together an update. I'll also mention this over
on MakingMicrotonalMusic as well.

Have a great tour, I'll try and catch LA (obviously San Diego is too
unhip, but I know a pretty good place for this kind of stuff if you
need another night to fill...)

Cheers,
Jon (who spent his first 2.6 years on the planet in lovely Lorain, OH)

Peter,

Yeah... cool, cool, cool, cool--sounds like a Gen X cross between
Janet Feder and Harry Partch! I'm really very, very impressed and I
definitely want to hear more... so, how do I get the album?

Good luck and keep up the great work!

take care,

--Dan Stearns

****Well this is indeed pretty weird so, naturally, I like it. Just
out of curiousity, what's the Oberlin connection??

Hey thanks for all the interest. Yeah, we all went to Oberlin, or some
are soon to graduate. The other three were composition majors and I was
an electronic music/chines major.

As for the cd, it will be done within a few weeks, and will definitely be
available at our tour stops, butn will also be available online...
There's a link to momus' site from our site, I think the distributer he
uses is www.darla.com... A 45rpm will also be availble at our tour stops,
with 3 singles (one including a very melodic very microtonal solo on found
steel gongs made out of scrap)... If there are any stops around you,
though, please come, because I'd like to meet all of you!

Thanks,
Peter

Cool, a band! Now you're talking my language.

That's a very large jpg for your west coast dates. Why not post them
in text somewhere?
