call for compositions (72-equal)

🔗paul@stretch-music.com

2/26/2002 11:38:32 AM

on friday night i met some members of the boston microtonal collective -- a group i was not previously aware of. they consist of a good number of young string players, trombonists, saxophonists, and even a trumpeter who are ready, willing, and able to perform compositions in the sims/maneri 72-equal notation. so far, they have been improvising their way through performances because of the dearth of compositions.

so, joseph, alison, and everyone else who's working in 72-equal, i hope you will help these folks out! i know i will be getting involved -- i may begin by transcribing blackwood's 18-equal etude, and will get a fretless guitar marked for 72-equal once my 12/22/31 fretless bass is done . . .

-paul (currently between studio recording sessions . . . we just used math to determine that a melody in 5/4 would work over a drum solo in 6/4 if we had six repetitions of the former and five of the latter :) )

****Hi Paul!

I responded to you privately and on MakeMicroMusic.

Is this an opportunity, or is it an opportunity? It's an opportunity.

Come on, all, no more futzing with / and \ !

Let's on to Sims/Maneri!!!!

Paul,

Thanks, this sounds really great, and any additional information would

thing.

take care,

***Hi Paul. I just wrote to the trombonist and cc'd you.

And, I printed this message.

Well, this is interesting, because I would be very interested in
finding out how the clarinet, alto sax and trumpet play 72-equal, and
if they use "alternate fingerings" or such like.

If you ever get a chance, could you please find out for me?? I
always ask people that question (like Julie Werntz) but never get an
answer...

And, how about the *piano*??

That must be a mighty *grand* piano... or, you said *2* pianos, so
maybe they "string them together..." That's more than TWO full
octaves...! :)

why don't you just ask matana the alto sax player? she's
the 'ringleader' by the way . . .

by the smiley, i assume you know it's always 12-equal piano. they're
not as 'emancipated' as some here might hope :) :)

they're not as 'emancipated' as some here might hope :) :)

***You know, I keep forgetting how *easily* 12-equal "melds" into
both 72-tET AND even Blackjack. Well, 4 notes of it, anyway. You
know, Dave Keenan was right to campaign for that extra 12-tET
Blackjack note!

This fact actually figures into some of my "secret" plans for the
future ahead... but anyone with half a brain could figure out what
they are, anyway...
