hmmm ... thanks for pointing that out, Dave. i'm afraid that
the n a m e of this has been thru several layers of adaptation.
i need to find the time to fix that on the webpage.

it was Dan Stearns's idea to use the tilde ~ as an accessory
to 72edo notation, and it was during the time a couple of years
ago when Dan and i seemed to be the only people interested in
adapting the Sims 72edo notation to ASCII. Dan actually used
the Sims symbols in his scores ... i was the one who liked
the other set, for both email and for scores.

i proposed the v^ = 1/4-tone, <> = 1/6-tone, -+ = 1/12-tone
symbols as the analogue to Sims's written symbols. Dan accepted
these, and we were communicating between each other using them.
then he told me about the tilde ~ idea and i loved it, in fact
used it in the piece i was writing at the time, "A Noiseless
Patient Spider" -- there are score examples on this page:
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/spider/spider.htm

it wasn't until last year that the big debate came up over
using v^ for 1/12-tones instead of 1/4-tones, and since i'd
already been using my system for a while a n d made a
conscious decision when i adopted it to use v^ for 1/4-tones
contrary to Sims, maybe now you understand why i'm so adamant
about not accepting the standard as the rest of you have.

but yes, if i'm going to leave Sims's name on that webpage,
then it definitely now needs to say something about this
controversy. i'm happy call the notation proposed there
simply "Stearns/Monzo 144edo", if that's ok with Dan.

***Hi Monz...

Well, of course, this came up in a lengthy series of discussions that
started with last year's Claremont Microthon. After I got back, I
was enthusiastic about learning more about Kyle Gann's and David
Doty's Just Intonation notation. (Should we call it "Intonotation?")

So, that led to a fascinating reappraisal of Ben Johnston's Just
notation and his beautiful String Quartets and well as the
interesting Perspectives of New Music article you suggested.

From there, the suggestion of emulating Just through 72-tET started,
but I wanted a smaller set to work with, and was hoping for a set of
(about) 19-tones per octave which emulated Just through 72-tET.

Some of our "geniuses" (well, I was called one *too* once, ha,
ha...) got working and, from the womb of the Tuning List, 21-note
*Blackjack* tuning was born along with a consensus ascii version of
Sims 72-tET notation.

And the world has never been the same.... :)

Hi Joe,

Whatever you think is best and would like to do there is fine with
me--I use the crosshatch modified Sims-Maneri accidentals on scores
and whatever best fits with what everyone else is using for ascii
email purposes. One thing I would add, is that this would seem a good
time to try and add the 12-tet referenced, 144 naming scheme that I
briefly outlined in some post yesterday or the day before in this
thread, let me know.

thanks as always,

--Dan Stearns
