AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF MICROTONAL MUSIC

MicroFest 2002: 21 Years

April 30 - May 31 - June 1 @ Washington Square United Methodist Church
May 25 @ Roulette

The American Festival of Microtonal Music, under the direction of
Johnny Reinhard, presents MicroFest 2002 : 21 Years: 4 concerts this Spring
between April 30th and June 1st in Greenwich Village, New York.
Three-of-four concerts will take place at the Washington Square United
Methodist Church (located at 135 West 4th Street). However, the second
concert of the series (May 25th) is at Roulette (228 West Broadway). All
concerts begin at 8 PM and general admission is $12, $6 for seniors and
students.

First concert-Tuesday, April 30th features Johann Sebastian Bach's
BRANDENBURG CONCERTO No. 4 highlighted by Andreas Werckmeister's published
chromatic tuning of 1691. The performance features violinist Dan Auerbach
and alto recorder players Johnny Reinhard and Deborah Booth. Harry Partch's
SEVENTEEN LYRICS BY LI PO (1930-33) will be performed in their entirety by
violist Anastasia Solberg and the evening's featured vocalist, Johnny
Reinhard. And Parisian Tristan Murail premieres his quadraphonic
acoustic/electronic composition WINTER FRAGMENTS for New York as performed by
the Subtilior quintet.

Second concert-Saturday, May 25th places an emphasis on prerecorded
music at Roulette (288 W. B'way) and presents the premiere of Joseph
Pehrson's BLACKJACK for trombone and recording source, and featuring Julie
Josephson as soloist. Giacinto Scelsi's MAKNONGAN for bassoon in optimum
register will be played by Johnny Reinhard. Marc Jones returns to play
49-one equal tempered guitar in his MOSTLY ELECTRIC STRING QUARTET No. 2,
following successful broadcasts of No. 1 on WNYC's New Sounds. Christine
Coppola-Maneri choreographs herself to The DAEMON by Moscow's Albina
Stefanou. Patrick Grant gives the world premiere of ROCK OF ALARM, and young
Bostonian David Glazier premieres his latest electronic work, TOKEN. A rare
exclusive private hearing of Wendy Carlos' AFTERLIFE, noted for its
successful "acoustifications" by the composer. Similarly, microtonal pioneer
Ivor Darreg's classic COLORLESS GREEN IDEAS SLEEP FURIOUSLY in 22-tone equal
temperament will be heard.

Third concert-Friday, May 31st celebrates the improvisational side
of music 'ala microtonal, while returning to Washington Square United
Methodist Church for the remainder of the series. A brilliant rhythm
section, featuring drummer Bruce Cox, percussionist Daniel Moreno, and
bassist Mat Fieldes, will play throughout the evening. They will field a
plethora of dynamic soloists. Guest Artists scheduled include trumpeter Lew
Soloff, soprano saxophonist Mike Ellis, bass clarinetist Ron Kozak,
"prepared" pianist Joshua Pierce, & bassoonist Johnny Reinhard. The call is
going out and is expected to bring a number of surprise soloists as well.

Fourth concert-Saturday, June 1st feature a number of rare gems.
Foremost are the Anton Webern lieder DAS LOCKERE SAATGEFILDE LECHZET KRANK
and AN BACHES RANFT with original quartertones performed by Reinhard, with
Joshua Pierce on piano. Doug Leedy's new Greek paen SAPPHO is premiered by
soprano Meredith Borden, and guitarist Harris Becker premieres Johnny
Reinhard's solo for scordatura guitar, POSSESSED. Skip LaPlante recycles his
timeless classic GLYPTODONT, named for an extinct giant South American
armadillo, both performed by Music For Homemade Instruments Ensemble. With
violin in hand, Jason Kao Hwang's takes MFHI on a FLIGHT OF WHISPERS.
Johnny Reinhard performs Tui St. George Tucker's HYPERTONIC SONATA for alto
recorder and Yuri Kasparov's SONATA INFERNALE for bassoon. Master Macedonian
bottles artist Zoron Madzirov explores his tuning inheritance in MICRODONIA.

The American Festival of Microtonal Music gave its first concert at
Christ and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church on March 7, 1981. The AFMM
Ensemble is responsible for the "first" Harry Partch performances in France,
Norway, Italy, Canada, & Switzerland, while reintroducing Ivan Wyschnegradsky
to Russia in 2000. To complement the achievement of over two decades of
presenting concerts, the AFMM will soon make available through Michael Thorne
and the Stereo Society a new studio recording of the Charles Ives UNIVERSE
SYMPHONY, as realized and conducted by Johnny Reinhard in the studio. A
complete score of this large work is in the works, and a new book by Johnny
Reinhard, THE IVES UNIVERSE, has now been written.

As always Johnny, congratulations--20 plus years is really quite an
amazing accomplishment and quite a testimony to your get the work done
attitude!
