And the alphabet itself starts at the bottom. As do chords, since we go by
the root (even when it is inverted higher than the bass note).

Apparently I've been hanging out with weirdos! :-)

More likely it's just that I usually don't use that means of specifying
notes very often. Since it seldom comes up, I've been using that
terminology backward for 33 years and never noticed!

Just to confuse things though, guitar strings are numbered downward in
pitch.

Why sure, Gary... and that seemed *very* peculiar to me... In all my
previous musical studies everything always went from *bottom to top*
as Johnny Reinhard attests. Only when I started "messing around"
with the guitar did I encounter the reverse... I'm sure that's the
cause of the confusion...
