Blackjack piece now online

The piece that I just finished in the "blackjack" scale for trombone
and electronics is now online and available for listening:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/140/tuning_lab.html

Of course, the "real" piece will have a live trombone. I'm still
copying out the part now...

Any commentary would be appreciated.

best,

Eh, bien...

C'est NO...

[Latch is seemingly liking my blackjack piece, but he feels I really
should hear the arrangement of the music for _The Red Violin_ which
he feels is both very contemporary and very musical...]

Great, Latch... I will enjoy hearing this. I don't know where you're
going to put it, though... Is there any possibility you can start
some kind of website or location for your musical examples??

Hi Joseph. I like your piece and have no problem with the timbres as I'm sure it will come to full
fruition with live instruments. I hear some Partch in there and the piece strikes me as very
idiomatic. That probably invites lots of debate, but in the same way that jazz is idiomatic, then
so is microtonal music and I think you have really captured something special with this one.

I was given an open ended commission by a percussion ensemble and started to tune batphones (large
tubes) to blackjack but I found this to be too cumbersome. I'll be carrying on with some other
form of tuned percussion and I'd be interested in the notation system that you've finally adopted
as I'll have to score things out at some point. Also how do you intend orchestrating your piece?

Best wishes.

Hello Alison!

Well, I'm sure you're aware from the discussions that the blackjack
scale is "conveniently" represented by 72-tET.

So, of course, I will just use the Ezra Simms/Joe Maneri notation
that is so practical. (With 12-tET, of course, in it with only the
addition of quarter-tones, sixth tones and 12-th tones).

In fact, unless I change my mind, which has never happened :), I
plan on using 72-tET notation for *all* my subsequent
microtonal/xenharmonic work.

It might be nice to be able to write in 12-tET again, but, frankly, I
don't know whether I can do it now! I'm not sure it's anymore on my
path at the moment, so I may be using 72-tET for some time!

You know... I heard a slight bit of Partch in my piece, too... I
guess I was listening to Partch a couple of years ago for, really,
the first time...

I would never have thought of Partch as particularly an influence...
but maybe he is now. His influence may be, actually, "liberating"
for my work...

I think, frankly, if at this moment I would have to choose between
Copland and Partch as influences at this point, I would choose
Partch...

Gee... things change in my composing life. Well... that's OK,
because that's why I continue composing. I *never* know where I'm
going to be going but, I *do* know that if it ceases to be
interesting I "ain't there, baby!"

Hello everybody!

My recent electronic piece in "Blackjack" called _Blect_ is now
online at the Tuning Punks:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2170/2170731.html

Any commentary, either pro or con (those of you who know me know I
have no problem, and even *encourage* the "critical...") would be
appreciated, either here or on MakeMicroMusic.

And, I believe John is going to correct the spelling of my first
name...
