Re: Mills Archive

Hi there,

Sorry to everyone for delay in making the Mills archive.

I've felt need to work on FTS and get things underway there.
However, I defninitely haven't forgotten about the archive!

The nbci site will close soon - they have stopped hosting
web pages.

I'm not sure what I'll do after that - it isn't so easy
to find a free site with unlimited space for web pages nowadays
- I think web hosts are finding that banner sponsorship
doesn't pay as much as they were expecting (I wonder
why?...!)

v3space have a generous limit of 100 Mb, but they restrict
the types of file extensions you can have, and e.g. won't
accept zip files. Could be a suitable place for the
html however.

However, I'll prob. upload the Mills archive zip into the
Tuning2 files area when ready.

If anyone wants to host the Yahoo / Mills archives when
ready, let me know!

Same applies to the FAQ. However, at present that isn't
too large so I should be able to find somewhere for it
for the time being somewhere.

Anyway, I'll do some more investigating, and this is warning
that the on-line archive and FAQ won't be available soon.
In fact this is already past the date they gave for closing
but it is still there as of today.

Robert

Hello Robert!

Thanks for all your attempts with this. Well, I guess the "Internet
Idealism" phase is over. Frankly, I'm surprised that banner ads
accounted for much of anything at all. Personally, I only *glance*
at them... (maybe I get something "subliminal...")

You are probably aware that Y-Drive, the online storage site, has
also closed. Now there is only _X-Drive_ which is a subscription
service (not *too* expensive, though...)

We'll have to keep trying or figure out something else... I believe
many of those old posts would be quite interesting...

Hi Joseph,

Yes, I was surprised too, to see how much the same things
were discussed then.

I have an option to add something to every page, and
planned to do that with a contact e-mail, and links to a page
with more info about the archive (and link to the tuning list
at the head of the contents page), but forgot
to do it. I'll do it for next time I upload it.
Thanks for mentioning it - hadn't noticed until you said.

Robert

If I don't understand it the *first* time around... etc. :)

***That sounds like a good idea. You might also want to include a
link to "Tuning2." People are now starting to use "Tuning2" as a
place to store sound files, since the FILES area in *this* group is
filled.

However, "Tuning2" doesn't contain the new "Miracle" group:

/miracle_tuning/messages

I'm not really sure that it was necessary to split *this* one off...
but Paul Erlich seemed to think it was, and it exists now. In fact,
it's rather valuable to *me* personally, since I'm working with those
scales and I'm getting some composing ideas from that list...

Thanks for all the hard work with this. It really enhances our
*Internet Resources.*

Most probably both Monz and John Starrett will want to have links to
this Mills list, since it's another valuable Internet Tuning
resource...

best,

Joseph

I have no idea how anyone can use tuning2 for anything. A search fails to bring it up. A search on "tuning" alone brings up 190 groups, *none* of which is tuning2. Why do we need this? Am I the only one who finds it counter-productive and annoying?

No, but if you were, what would it matter? Nonetheless, it *is* a
dumb idea *if* the only reason for using it is that the files area
here is full. Since there are 570+ people who might want to upload
something, it really behooves those that do put something up that it
be there

1. temporarily
2. removed by the person who put it up in a timely fashion

If something is so all embracingly important that it needs to stay
somewhere, that person needs a website. And then all this sight would
need would be one small .html page with links to all these
irreplaceable items.

Finite resources work perfectly fine if used wisely. But maybe I'm
the only one annoyed by this... :)

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Gene!

Robert Walker (who is also a *mathematician* so you'll probably find
him a "cool cat...") set this up to make it *easier* for people,
believe it or not...

The idea was to have a *central* place where *all* the groups were
listed, so that we didn't lose track of any of them.

Apparently you use the list on the web. Here is the URL:

/Tuning2/

The URL isn't so terribly exotic for somebody of your mental
horsepower... :)

And to Jerry. All you have to do is *join* "Tuning2" and then you
can post to the files area there. Nothing to it.

I'm sorry if "Tuning2" has been an annoyance to anybody. The idea,
according to Robert was to make a *convenience* not an annoyance...

best,

Joe

I found it; but people won't use it if they can't find it, and Yahoo didn't bring up up--perhaps the capital T?
