other people to praise

Oh... and continuing my paean of praise of many of the wonderful, and
practical musicians on this list, I would like to continue with
people I have missed.

Although I may be accused of "lack of discrimination" in citing
everybody's accomplishments, I really don't care. In this field it's
important that people be BOLSTERED, not torn down and criticized.

Dan Stearns, who writes a s**tload of music, Jeff Scott, similarly,
Allison Monteith... Margo Schulter, who is now making her wonderful
experiments audible to all.

Paul Erlich, although known primarily for his excellent and
intelligent expositions of tuning on this list (wish I could keep
up!) also is an eminently practical musician, ALWAYS playing and
improvising... his music is primarily of an improvisational, rather
than a set form... that's OK, though, unless one wishes to damn all
jazz musicians of all time!

His music may be found at the following site in the band he is
playing with,

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/186/stretch_boston.html

Likewise, Dave Keenan, although primarily a mathematician, is also
doing some creative acoustic experiments, which are propelling the
forefront of our art.

I am proud and happy to be associated with these many individuals who
are "pushing the envelope" (and even "licking the stamps") for new
art forms involving new tuning systems.

This list is a very special and practical place, and I am grateful to
be involved!

Me too, Joe! As someone who posts far more new tunings of old works
than new works of my own, I probably qualify as "licking the stamps",
but I am happy to report that I use the new, lickless stamps whenever
possible, and they work just fine.

I guess, though, that I don't think Jon Szanto would disagree. If he,
or anybody, challenges us to spend a little more time making music and
a little less time playing with numbers, that's not a bad thing, is it?
Certainly we are free to say, "Hold on - just a few more numerical
refinements first." Or even, "Numbers are my life; get used to it."

Did I miss the post from Jon that got you so riled up?

John, your work in re-tuning prior composed works is so well-done,
well-intentioned, and well-meaning (I left out well-tempered) that it
stands on it's own! You have no need to apologize that it isn't
composing.

I didn't even do that (at least this time!) and it was simply Joe's
misreading of one statement in a reply to Christopher Baily. The
bizarre part is that I was saying how I've found my way to an
appreciation of the research/math side of the discussions!

Cheers,
Jon

I personally don't believe in "tearing down" people, either. But it
seems that any criticism is off-limits, and that seems not only
counter-productive but needlessly protective. Last I looked, everyone
around here was a grown-up.

So am I. I just think it is important to take off the cheerleader
outfit and drop to the pom-poms occasionally.

Jon.... I prefer my cheerleaders "au naturel" so let's just drop it,
OK??

Joe,

Anything else goes on metatuning. This is a waste of people's time.
