La Monte Young, "inventor" of Minimalism

🔗jpehrson@rcn.com

From this month's NewMusicBox interview with Terry Riley:

Riley:

"But I must say I think La Monte is the fountainhead of this modern
music period that's called minimalism in the sense that he defined
very clearly in his mind and in his work as a very young man, the
kind of space that minimalism holds. First of all you have this
space, then it's filled with something. Well La Monte filled it with
long tones and he also worked with repetition..."

I wonder why Cage is left out of this one. But also can one invent what other cultures have done
for centuries.

Good point, Kraig... and after all, the idea of finding out
who "invented" and "copyrighted" minimalism is pretty idiotic to
begin with, no??

Maybe you should write a comment over on the NewMusicBox about the
thing regarding minimalism and other cultures. I think Frank Oteri
would really appreciate that.

I believe you've posted over there before...

Good call. I just replaced my LP of Sonatas and Interldes for
Prepared Piano with a CD. Between that, the String Quartets and
the similarly themed Sonata for viola and Piano, one could
easily give Cage the Father of Minimalism award.

But if we take it out of the Western Art Music context then it
will just reach back forever.

Should we say, "score one for McLaren...??" Dunno. I still think
there is a possibility of getting quite a range of consonance *and*
dissonance with the Miracle blackjack... But, I'm still a "beginner"
with it. In fact, I'm still a "beginner" in microtonality!

Terry is very specific. He says that La Monte is the begining of a movement.
And he is - as far as minimalism in the late 20th century is concerned, he's
the source that fed the river.

I don't they labeled it minimalism. From the same interview:

"We spent a lot of time playing together and improvising together, but never thinking
about for instance "is this a kind of music" or "is there something this should be called?"
Uh, I think that came later."

I don't have time to look it up, but I think it's a tag created by the press.
