"Peace and Love" Jacky Ligon has established a mighty "fightin'" list!

Now Brian mclaren is over there, and all hell is breaking out! I
would urge members of THIS list to go over there, and answer mclaren,
since many of his accusations have been directed at our OWN members.

Let's DEFEND ourselves! Something beneficial will result in the
interchange!

Hi Joseph,

What beneficial thing could possibly result from this kind of an
interchange in an email forum of this kind -- especially when there's
no middle ground and all points and problems are personalized?

Honestly, I know some people seem to love watching these gruesome
interpersonal logjams and the inevitable verbal carnage that ensues,
but I really do tire of all the squabbling -- especially in retrospect
(my own included).

Nothing is ever resolved. Any possible flow of potentially valuable
info is stymied. And the toxic mess sits its ass down on the shelves
of the archives and various internet locals for everyone's repeated
enjoyment.

Someone's idea of fun for sure. But how about giving Joseph's own
ever-growing collection of microtonal music that's sprung right up
along side his participation in this very list a listen if you want
something beneficial to result in the interchange!

Not as much fun? Maybe not, I dunno...

Hi Dan...

Well, actually, Jacky doesn't want that discussion on the "Practical"
list, either... and I *do* suppose mclaren makes it all too
personalized.

It should probably be on the "meta" list, if anyplace, but I doubt
sincerely mclaren would go over there...

I just gave all the referenced links over there for my music. I
think it's probably pretty good proof that THIS Tuning List has
resulted in something practical...

The diatribes are funny, but, you're right, probably non-productive...

Unfortunately, since I'm not a member, I can't read the messages
there, nor can I post. They'll just have to have their little feces
toss without me, I guess.

On a lighter note, does anyone have the "formula" for Partch's "One-
Footed Bride"? I have the Sethares formulas for consonance, but I'm
starting to play around with the Partch scale, and I was hoping to
find some mathematical function for the "bride" somewhere.

Q: How do you get an elephant out of a theatre?
A: You can't. It's in their blood.

Hi Ed, we've discussed this quite a bit over on the harmonic entropy
list (harmonic_entropy@yahoogroups.com). If you will post this
question there, I'll try to address it fully, which will include
considerations from Partch's text. Yes, we have a "formula" --
called "octave-equivalent harmonic entropy". The resulting family of
curves reflect the same relative consonance ratings for the Ratios of
3, of 5, of 7, of 9, and of 11, that Partch shows in the graph. But
the behavior of the curve at other points better reflects Partch's
own philosophy -- namely, all the ratios in the 11-limit should be at
local minima of dissonance -- and the One-Footed Bride as Partch drew
it would imply otherwise, if taken too "literally" (an odd term to
apply to a curve, but you know what I mean).

> I have the Sethares formulas for consonance,

I've tried working with Sethares on using these formulas but we ended
up with some unresolved conundrums (I'm still hoping to hear from
Sethares since he told me he would try to look into it further).

Looking forward to continuing discussions on harmonic_entropy,
Paul

Well, I guess I'll just hop over to harmonic entropy then ... I was
actually looking through the posts trying to get a clean algorithmic
specification for harmonic entropy ... I never really did get to the
point where I could re-create the curves posted on Joe Monzo's web
pages.

I hearby offer you an immediate membership in OCMEUL (Official
Corporeal Meadows Email Update List), which will alert you (well in
advance) of any activities regarding Partch: publications, concerts,
recordings, etc.

Just write to me or say "Yes!" on the list and I'll add your name.
Updates go out (usually) not more than about once, maybe twice, a
month, so it's not an in-box clogger.

I'll have a note to the list about post-mortems on the LA HP
Centennial when I post it on the site, as it was a very, very good
day indeed...

Cheers,
Jon
