Someone today sent me a catalog of "Cedille Records." It's a small
record company outside Chicago. Interesting stuff, including SEVERAL
recordings of music and piano performance by Easley Blackwood.

I was particularly impressed that Blackwood was PERFORMING difficult
modern works on piano, including Ives CONCORD SONATA and Copland's
PIANO SONATA...

Having gone somewhat through Blackwood's "Structure of Recognizable
Diatonic Tunings" (Still looking for my own copy!!) I was naturally
impressed with his mathematical and theoretical skills.

This rather belies the notion that one cannot be a skilled,
mathematically/scientifically inclined theoretician and a fine
performer and composer as well....

Some people just have it all...

Here is the Cedille Records website. You can order right on line. I
plan to myself...

A. That's a pretty strong notion. I, for one, wouldn't preclude the
possibility of such a beast, only attest to it's rarity.

B. "fine performer" -- this is *before* you've ordered the CDs? I
have numerous recordings of people who, at best, struggle through a
work. But maybe he's magnificent; let us know when you've heard it!

[addendum to B. If there are other performances you've heard Mr.
Blackwood play on, and well, then _never_mind_...]

Cheers,
Jon

Jon...

Anyone who can play Charles Ives CONCORD SONATA and put it on record
has to be an excellent pianist. I've only played the third movement
myself. I have no more to say on that subject...

More to the point: "Anyone can put Charles Ives CONCORD SONATA on a
record"; whether it is done musically or well is another matter.
After all, there are such things as 'vanity' recordings.

I have no more to say on that subject...

Same here.

Jon

I don't know, Jon. Few can do it as Easley...
