political discussion groups

Anybody encounter any *decent* political discussion groups, i.e.
where there is more than *one* side advanced and people make
*substantive* posts about the issues?? I checked some on Usenet and
they mostly seem partisan...

And, how about live chat? There are some fairly active live chat
discussion rooms on Yahoo chat, but things go so fast people just say
a line or so and its mostly trivial. Or is that the way that most
such live chat rooms are?

I guess I'm looking for some kind of interactive, meaningful
discussion if I were to, say, wake up with insomnia at 3AM or some
such, and it would be even more exciting if it were live and
interactive...

Any suggestions, or do such things not really exist??

That's an interesting question. I do notice that chat rooms do get bogged down
in the dross....I'll let you know if I come across any of interest, although
I almost never do chat, but sometimes Instant Messenger.

BTW, What I think would be interesting would be an IRC or Yahoo chat room for
we tuning and microtonal nuts !!!! Perhaps I'll set one up...but I won't go
through the trouble if no-one would log on.

I would log on, but would have to keep my participation to a minimum
until I'm done with this temperaments-scales-TOP paper (see tuning-
math).

Aaron, I don't know if you do your posting from an email program or on the web, but if you go to any of the Yahoo forums (with a browser) and look to the menu on the left, you'll see an item labeled "Chat".

Yep - all one need do is download the applet for the chat (I believe it is a Java-based applet for browsers) and then anyone within that particular forum can chat. I've thought about doing this some day/night in MMM, but never got around to it (mainly because I wouldn't want to set it up with people and then not be there myself!).

In any event, I've only used it once or twice but seems worth a try if people want to interract in semi-real time...

Cheers,
Jon

***Thanks for discovering this, Jon! Actually, if one has already
signed in and chatted at the main Yahoo chat site, no more
downloading is necessary.

I don't believe there is any notice, however, for other people that
one is presently "chatting," so I guess we would have to make that
announcement on the forum and then people would go over to chat...

That is possible, but I don't believe the applets live on your machine for long, if at all. Then again, if someone has a broadband connection (I believe you do), the applet would download almost immediately; last night on my dialup the chat function appeared after only about 20 seconds of dl'ing.

Look again: when you start the chat function, the right hand portion of the screen shows a list of people (by their usernames) that are currently in the room; the msgs the people send to the chat room are preceded by that same username.

Cheers,
Jon

***Hi Jon,

I don't think that was exactly what I meant...

I meant that there was no way to specifically *invite* other people
to chat unless one makes a post on the main forum, correct??

I think you would have invite people from that list
with email to the list. Or agree on a time when
everybody can show up in the chat room.

Anyone one who hasn't been following the thread--we can chat using the 'chat'
button from the web interface, or through IM by plugging the appropriate room
in......

I'll pop in at 9pm CDT (10pm east coast, 7pm West Coast) to the 'metatuning'
chat room to see if anyone wants to shoot the breeze tonight. In fact, as a
rule, I'll try to keep a client open at all times when I'm here in the
morning....look out for me in 'metatuning' or from Yahoo chat clients:

/join g.metatuning:1

The other thing we could do is use Yahoo IM clients and hold conferences. If
you edit you user profile in the Yahoo database, we know how to reach one
another. I've had nice chats with Carl and with David Beardsley this way.

My Yahoo ID is akjmicro if anyone wants to IM me.....

Joseph, you were in the metatuning chat room this morning, but not responding.
Was your boss over your shoulder? ;)

Best,
Aaron.

***Hi David...

Got it... I think maybe the *time* idea would be the best one if we
wanted to do this sometime...

David, that is pretty much what I had in mind. Say I wanted to have a discussion on MMM about, oh, the beauties of non-harmonic-motion musics - I would post to the list "hey, let's talk about that stuff this weekend - I'll be online from 5-7 pm, PST on Saturday".

And then I'd fire up the chat window and see who shows up.

As far as Joe is asking, you could get all the people, again by posting to the list, to try out one of the messenger tools just to get in touch about chatting, but that hardly seems better than the list. And, no, I don't think you'd be able to mix in non-forum members.

Cheers,
Jon
