yes.

this has been one *very* busy week for computer viruses.

my AT&T email account (the one from which i subscribe
to all my Yahoo groups) went haywire late Sunday night,
and for 3 days all i kept getting were multiple copies
of the same 6 messages. i must have deleted about
200 or 300 copies of each one, and in the meantime
no new messages got thru.

i spoke to someone at AT&T tech support about it
last night, and that person insisted that it must
have been a virus on my computer, and i insisted that
my computer was clean.

i have ZoneAlarm firewall, which keeps out most of
that junk, and Norton AntiVirus, which generally deletes
viruses which do make it in, and even if it doesn't
delete a virus that it finds, it always at least *tells*
me that i've been infected. and everything checked out
OK on my end.

then magically today the email problem suddenly disappeared,
and everything was back to normal. so i'm convinced
that the problem was on the AT&T end, and they just
wouldn't admit it to me while they were trying to fix it,
for fear that i'd dump them and find another DSL provider.

if you do a few searches on the subject, you'll find
that viruses have indeed been a big problem worldwide
for the past few days.

(unfortunately, i also managed to get another kind of
virus in my *stomach* on monday too, and i'm still not
over it.)

Last week I got 2-3 per day. Haven't seen any this
week.

Probably you're address is known to lots of folks with the
virus. Unless someone got a hold of a swath of AT&T
addresses. But in any case, some viruses perform nasty
things at certain times and sit dormant in between, so a
stop to activity doesn't necessarily mean you're clean.

The best protection against viruses...

() Don't execute untrusted code.
() Don't use Word or Outlook.
() Keep abreast of the latest Windows updates.
() Run a firewall.
() Avoid anti-virus software.

Actually, I'm not aware of any common ailments of the
gut which are related to viruses. "Stomach flu" is
almost always caused by food poisoning.

i've been getting a huge number this week, far more than ever before,
but they all have the viruses stripped out before they even reach my
machine, thanks to anti-virus software upstream from me.

huh? *avoid* anti-virus software? i don't get it.

any tips on a good non-Microsoft alternative to Outlook?

that's not what i've read. according to

http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/health/publications/stomachflu.htm

>> "Infection with norovirus irritates the stomach and intestines

i could list other internet sources giving similar info ...
do a search and you'll find lots of them.

hmm, seems I am have _no_ virus barrage at all due to both AOL's security and
my nasty lil Russian defensive/offensive 'hackware system for Mac (which is
no longer available online- the whole Russian 'hackware site seems to have
disappeared!... perhaps cuz it had 'hackware with anti-CARNIVORE capabilities
amongst many other such programs).

By some measures anti-virus software is as bad as
most viruses. The companies that make anti-virus
software use fear mongering and prey on people who
don't understand computer security. One company
(Norton) has even been caught in the act of inventing
virus threats. The constant update downloads cost
a lot of bandwidth, and the constantly-running,
horribly over-engineered software causes a huge
performance hit locally.

> any tips on a good non-Microsoft alternative to Outlook?

Eudora has many problems, but also gets a lot right.
I've been using it since 1995. I can't really see how
people can use Outlook at all, to be honest, even aside
from the virus issue. Though a few folks I respect do
use it. I'm told Ximian's Evolution is quite good,
though it only runs on linux AFAIK. Other than that,
I don't know of anything. You might try searching
sourceforge.

More to the point: pretty-good security models for
computing exist, and better ones are on the way (see
erights.org). If a virus comes along and exploits
a weakness, you fix the weakness in the model, or
the implementation of the model. It's a very poor
strategy to issue manual fixes based on particular
implementations of particular viruses (ala "anti-virus"
software) -- that way, each virus has to do a minimum
amount of damage before it can be stopped, and stopping
one doesn't help you stop the next one. The sad thing
is that anti-virus software companies have decided to
see this as a model for perpetual business, just like
the proverbial pharmaceutical companies that seek out
symptom treatments rather than cures to stay in
business. Except in this case, it's a much more
accurate description of the situation.

yesterday (thursday), according to my PCcillian log, I got 18 virus emails
(attachments deleted by program of course). Today is one hour old and I've
gotten 4 already. CrAzY.

I am now receiving upwards of 50 emails per day with virus attachments.
Today is only half over, and already I have gotten 50. This is getting
ridiculous! What is more, even though I do not have the virus and have never
had it (this is SOBIG ZI'm talking about), my email address is being
"spoofed" so that infected emails are being sent from somewhere that appear
to be comming from me, so I am getting emails showing that certain servers
are rejecting spoofed emails from me that contain virus attachments.
Apparently, when someone who has your email address in their email program
becomes infected, the virus can use not only their address but yours and
anyone else's it finds there. This is truely a new form of nastiness.
