Has everybody heard Frederic Rzewski's piano work _The People
United..._??

Incredible piece and amazing variation technique. It's not in an
alternate tuning, but it doesn't need it. Spellbinding.

I even saw Ursala Oppens do it live. her original recording still the best.

Oh, my god Joe, you're not just *now* discovering Rzewski? :) I've thought that 'People' could almost be a course in the path of musical thought in the last 100 years - certainly one of the great theme and variations of all time!

Did you hear it live, or on recording? I've got Marc-Andre Hamelin playing it, but I'd give my left nut to hear Rzewski play it himself - he is a ferocious and magnificent player. There was recently coverage of his solo recital in the New Yorker, IIRC.

Boy, one of the great ones, Rzewski, and committed to social issues as well. I don't give a flying ... if this boy doesn't use microtones.

Cheers,
Jon

I'll bet she tears it up; I'm gonna look for that recording as well!

Jon- looks like you can keep your left nut, but you may have to fork over
$46 (not too bad for 7 CDs actually):

Excellent, Dante - I can continue to operate in stereo testosterony! Hell, why else do I do summer pops programs (this evening: a night on Broadway...) but to reward myself with things like this. Gad, I'm running up to my birthday shortly, and the sweet wife last year got me the box set of Conlan Nancarrow complete player piano music. Some times it just all works out...

Cheers,

good thing you are not a merzbow fan, cause then she would have to shell out for the 100 CD set

I've thought about releasing my entire catalog of works/performances on an exclusive 250 CD Box Set, with only a couple minutes on each cd. And the sad part is that if someone did this, someone would probably buy it!

Hence Merzbow , but it is not even his collected works, all original cuts for this set.
It makes me realize that as much as those of us into tuning do not have a definite style, as a whole, i have noticed there not much interest in the so-called 'noise' thing in these parts. al least none of us seem to be
putting such tthings out

Give me a couple months, Kraig: I just got a new computer on eBay to help me do some of the music/sound tasks I've been working towards, and I'm aiming to attempt some live shows as well, incorporating composed sound/music pieces and live playing.

We'll see - life hasn't been too kind the last couple of years to my ideas of free time for my artistic side, but... we'll see.

Cheers,

Totally agree. My friend Missy, then a composition student
at BU, turned me on to it in 1999.

Also she introduced me to Berio. Haven't yet decided what
I think of his stuff.

WTF? I've been compared to Merzbow on two separate occasions, not that I listen to much of his stuff. Mats did some really austere noise works -- at least, I think they were supposed to sound like that and it wasn't the MP3 player malfunctioning ;)

Brink has done some stuff that i think is really
incredible, especially his pieces in phi-based tuning.

he seems to be pretty much living in San Diego
these days, and in fact is much more a part of
the physical Sonic Arts than i have been for at
least a year. (i'm still in charge of the virtual)
wish i could find the time to get over there and
do some improvising with he and Jonathan.

(Bill Wesley is often a part of the goings-on as well,
and i really the direction *his* work has taken.)

... but guess what? -- at this point i'm talking
entirely about microtonal music, so this belongs on
the regular tuning list, where i've also sent a copy.
