I'm getting a glimmer that MTV no longer airs music videos??
Wazzup?? Where do TV watchers watch music videos these days, and
what is MTV doing instead?

I don't have cable, and do all my music video watching, and quite a
bit of my music listening on the Web.

Thanks!

***Actually, the "MTV-equivalent" in Russia is actually pretty
interesting. I remember watching the videos there until late in the
night.... They seemed quite varied and the assembly of the show
pretty sophisticated. Well, they have yet to "grow up" downward to
the 11-year old stage... maybe after capitalism "sinks in" more...

i was playing thru the Franz Liszt piano
arrangement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony
the other day when i "discovered" a very
daring but well-disguised, sort of
slap-in-the-face "breaking of the rules"
of traditional harmony.

simply because Beethoven's 5th Symphony
is such a monumentally famous piece, i'm
absolutely sure that this has been written
about before.

can anyone find the reference? i'd love
to read it. perhaps someone who belongs
to a music-theory group, or specialized
Beethoven group, could forward it, so that
i increase my chances of a good response. :)

here's the chord progression:

Beethoven 5th Symphony, 1st movement, m. 79-80

Db - Eb - F - Eb
Ab ----- Bb -----
F ----- G -----

notice not only the parallel 5ths

Eb - F
Ab - Bb

but also the parallel 9ths!

Eb - F
F - G

this type of chord progression is a precursor
of examples from compositions by Satie, Ravel,
and Debussy about 80 years later.

the two lines are a line with augmentation. and the parallel 7ths are on the weak part of the measure, in fact the phrase is unaccented in relation
to whats around it. I have noticed elsewhere that alot of his themes outline 9ths.
for his breaking rules ( that never existed) i like that the 2nd movement of the 7th opens and ends on 6/4 chord ( but that is because the theme
repeats the 5th of the scale)
Melody is always more important than harmony.
right now i am trying to purge as much harmony from my thinking as possible [ i know it will sneak back anyway] but i do better without it

No surprise that you aren't always welcome on the main list... I feel the same way as you, KG, and I know that harmony and formalism will always find a way, even if subconsciously, in my work. But the last couple of years of music-making, performing, reading and listening has confirmed for me that the Western art of harmonization raises as many barriers to communication as it opens paths, possibly even worse than that. I've grown tired of the intellectual artiface of it, and hope it eventually will recede. Certainly from my work, hopefully from a lot of others.

At least that is how I feel tonight. Tomorrow may be different.

Cheers,
Jon

monz, this does *not* count as an instance of prohibited parallel
5ths according to any counterpoint book i ever studied. the fifths
have to be actually *sounded together* as fifths -- if they come in
one voice at a time, there's no danger of losing the independence of
the voices. i'm sure you can find plenty of examples like this in
bach, etc.
