New York, the police state

I'm sorry to say it, but New York right now looks like a police
state. It's *amazing* we have to go through this now after all that
happened Sept. 11!

I sure hope it fills the city coffers (and there are no coffINs) but
I think the idea of holding this World Economic Conference which has
almost *always* been accompanied by violence is *really* wrong-headed
and an abuse of the citizenry of this city...

There are police *everywhere.* I walked down Times Square and there
were about 20 officers *there* and it's *far* away from the Waldorf
Astoria...

This is so nerve-wracking, it's enough to drive people crazy!

Hey, Joseph!

I attribute most of my ranting idealoguery these days to that consciousness,
and I'm not literally close to it.

Hang tough, man!

We are going through this BECAUSE of 9:11.

Also due to the violent history of these meetings....

Why is it so nerve racking?

*****Hi David!

Why, of course, but the residents of this city really don't need
*more* violence at this point! Maybe it won't happen, because of the
outsize security... but it makes this city a really weird place.

Have you been to the Upper East Side of Manhattan?? There are
practically as many police(men) as pedestrians!

****Well, the thought of potential violence and the disruption of
streets and neighborhoods right in the middle of the city is
unsettling.

I just hope it proves to be the "economic boon" it's supposed to be,
since it really is unsettling for people.

You don't think that walking down the street past 100 police(men) can
be a little unsettling??

Joseph,

I regret that I could not join the protesters there in
a show of solidarity.

NYC Protests Planned Against World Economic Forum

Over 1,000 of the world's corporate leaders, along with
top political and media representatives, will meet
behind closed doors in New York City from January 31 to
February 4 at the World Economic Forum's annual
meeting. Meanwhile thousands of students, union members
and activists plan to protest in what is expected to be
the largest American anti-corporate globalization
demonstration post-9/11.

Formed in 1971, the Davos-based WEF is viewed by
critics as the architect of corporate globalization and
the catalyst for the formation of the World Trade
Organization. Although the Forum is a private affair,
the meeting's clout has begun to rival that of the
United Nations as the world's leading global body.

"Should a Forum that is dominated by corporate
interests be encouraged to take on the role of mapping
out future frameworks for global governance?" asked
scholar Peter Goodman in his piece "The WEF: Capital's
First International?"

For protest organizers such as Students For Global
Justice, Another World Is Possible and the New York
Anti-Capitalist Convergence the answer is clearly no.
At the same time protesters pour into New York to
protest the global elite meet-and-greet, activists in
Porto Alegro, Brazil, will attend the World Social
Forum to discuss alterative social and economic models
to prove "Another World Is Possible".

Not to the upper east side, but I did see teams of
four cops on various street corners. 23rd & Madison,
Penn Station. I've gotten used to seeing them.

It does seem to be a lot, but I'm used to seeing a lot of security at Penn
Station. I wouldn't mind seeing a larger military presence at Penn Station.

As for the area around the WEC, I don't have any business up there
so I stay away.

WE?- are you a cop - second what does this have to do with 9/11. There were
people in that building that would be with the protesters today

the violence has all been on the police side from what i can tell. It looks
more like the set up for "1905" see Shostakovich's sym.11 for details

WE = the people of NYC. I count myself among them because I
spend so much time in NY.

THEY --> the NYC police are extra paranoid because of 9/11. The history
of these WEC meetings sure doesn't help.

Excuse me, I have to go play some guitar...

****Well, you're lucky David. My wife and I have to walk through
this every day!

Tonight there were, literally *hundreds* of cops in front of the GAP
on 42nd Street. It's amazing here.
