The sad thing is that he wouldn't say this today. He's gone SOFT. . .and,
to some extent, so has his music.

What if Harry Partch woke up one day and said, "Gee, maybe the totality
of Western Classical Music isn't so bad after all . . " or La Monte Young
said, "Oooh, I've decided to go back to writing 12-tet piano music."

These would be sad things.

BE HARD-CORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! No fear!!! Great art does NOT come from compromise.

Cheers,

Hi Christopher,

I agree, hardcore is definitely my mindset as well, and it's been that
way since I started doing music when I was 13-years-old... if I were
to ever start tailoring the way I hear things and go about things to
what I thought were other people's expectations, I'd know it was over.
It wouldn't be worth a spit... it might be music and it might be good,
but it would be a lie in a place where I'd rather not have any (lie =
shit).

I'm not familiar enough with Carter's recent output to say anything
one way or the other, but I can see where someone's glow might take on
mellower more autumnal hues with age and whatnot... that wouldn't
surprise me and could possibly be quite interesting as well...

take care,

hardcore Stearns

CB!
Possibly elliot realized the cul de sac he got him self into. The only
way out is the way you come in. The other two seem to avoid trapping
themselves too much!

for what it's worth, my opinion is that Dan Stearn's music is
both extremely complex *and* extremely listenable! (stay hardcore, Dan!)

that's a good observation ... Carter is now 92 years old (unless
i just missed his 93rd birthday). pretty autumnal if you ask me!

(and for the record, i like a variety of Carter's stuff from
all periods of his output, and dislike even more of it.)

***But the thing is, Chris, personally I really like the new
*romantic* Carter of the _Violin Concerto_ and it's a bit more in
keeping with the times... I guess, as usual, it's all a matter
of "taste..."
