I hate to be "difficult..." but for me, McLaren's posts were about
the only thing interesting on the Practicalmicrotonality list!

Since you appear to be either the only one, or one of the rare few,
who feels this way, there is no reason for the two of you to have a
productive and beneficial *private* email correspondence. Everybody
wins.

Joseph!
Well you got his e-mail and maybe you have more in common than you realize!

Jon... I think you wanted to add a "not" in this sentence, "no?"

Absolutely. What's that Monz says, "me bad"? Yes, the idea was I
thought you and Brian could have a fruitful correspondence between
the two of you.

Yuck, yuck... that's a "good one," Kraig... You're pretty perceptive
sometimes...

Even *I* can't warm up to the "flame thrower..." :)

Yes, Jon... I can hardly wait for that. We *did* that already at
MicroFest. He did all the talking and I stood there. That's
the "interchange..."

Ah, hell, I'm totally confused. I thought you liked his stuff and I
inferred a greater dialogue was at hand. But the scenario you write
about above is what I would usually expect to happen. I'm only sorry
you weren't there on Friday when he insulted the entire roomful of
microtonalists, including (and especially) the host of the
conference, Bill Alves.

Yes, that was *indeed* a very clever and "political" move on his
part! :)

At that moment, I was standing under a palm tree with my wife, trying
to figure out where the school was...

Just missed it by 1/2 hour...

No... the fact is I, unfortunately, find mclaren "entertaining..."
but it's like watching sex and violence... gratuitous...

I'm glad to hear you say this, because I was starting to worry about
your gleeful rubbing of hands at all the carnage.

I feel entertained to some extent, but other factors outweigh that
feeling. Here's a very sad person, flaunting his sadness to the world.
Then, when helping hands try to reach out, he snaps at them. I'm a
reasonably big boy, so if he pops off at me (as he in fact did once
before the nuke hit), I can deal with it. And I can respect anyone's
passion for music, though it might have a somewhat different focus than
my own.

What I have a _lot_ more trouble tolerating is his complete and total
refusal to acknowledge the extent to which many people DID respond to
his challenge(s). Over and over again, in ever more strident tone, he
said "Nothing! Absolutely nothing! Total silence!" (etc., etc. - I
can't do a good imitation...).

This is difficult for me to forgive. This is not passion, it is lies.
I really think he needs to get past that before I would want to accept
his presence on a list.

And puh-leeze! 2000 lines and 100K bytes in ONE post? Wouldn't 1000
lines be enough? Rant if you will, but condense it down a bit! I too
have a slow connection.

Incidentally, we needn't be helpless victims here. It's fairly easy
to write a Python script to delete messages from the server if they
exceed a certain size, or come from a certain person. It won't work
with digests, but it's a start.

As an example, here's the script I use to clear any tuning list
messages I've read at work so I don't have to download them again at
home. You can update it to work with whatever mailing lists you're
subscribed to, and whatever spam you regularly get.

import string, re
import getpass, poplib

liststrings = [
"'Mailing-List: list tuning@yahoogroups.com; contact tuning-
owner@yahoogroups.com',",
"'Mailing-List: list practicalmicrotonality@yahoogroups.com;
contact practicalmicrotonality-owner@yahoogroups.com',",
"'Mailing-List: list harmonic_entropy@yahoogroups.com; contact
harmonic_entropy-owner@yahoogroups.com',",
]
spamstrings = ["'From: \"silicon.com\" <silicon@...>',",
"'To: minim@...',"]

box = poplib.POP3('mail.your.isp')
box.user('username')
box.pass_(getpass.getpass())
count, size = box.stat()
for mess in range(1,count-10): # save 10-ish messages
header = str(box.top(mess, 0))
for junkstring in (liststrings+spamstrings):
if string.find(header, junkstring)>=0:
print mess, subject
box.dele(mess)
break
box.quit()

If you are into "labeling" behaviors that is usually seen as a
delusional psychosis.
