A friend told me the Ultrasones at mercenary.com for +/-$300 would "change your life". I'd do it, if I had the money...

One place to try for comparisons is...
I poke around there once in a when I'm looking to see what's good for what
I can afford... ;-)

Oh, and I use a pair of Sony MDR-CD580 headphones in my "studio". They
have good bass response and are comfortable, and you can get them for well
under $100. And my computer sound card drives them quite adequately with no
other amplification.

Two differing uses:
For pure listening, one can't beat Grado SR-60's (except that Carl's ears hate them). They will *never* win style awards, but the newer foam design is much more comfortable, are great with portables, and they have a very balanced sound. Just got my wife a set as well, $69 (lots of online sources). The Headroom (http://www.headphone.com/) says:
"The best all-around headphones for a portable player are clearly the Grado SR60 ($69). These headphones are truly outstanding in their class, and though they're a bit on the ugly side your ears will love you for your willingness to shell out a few more bucks. There simply isn't a better sounding headphone for portable use under $100."
For monitoring/mixing (though mixing with cans is not recommended), Sennheiser HD-280 Pros have worked well for me, esp. since they have such a good isolation db rating (i.e. they keep out the outside noise, very handy when doing field recordings to check levels). Got my pair about a year ago from B&H, right around $75.
And if you go with the former (listening), you need to bust the budget and get the Headroom Little, a great headphone amp that does away with the empty hole in the middle of your head when listening on headphones. I've had to do a lot of listening on phones late at night in the last few years, and this *really* makes for a great experience. It is a product from the people at the Headroom (link in the above paragraph), where there is all kinds of info on headphone use and listening, and many models for sale at decent prices (including the above two models). See the Little here:

Jon

The brands to consider (unless you want in-ears) are:
Ultrasone
Sennheiser
Sony
Ultrasone are the best IMO. Sennheiser are a worthy competitor,
though.
Sony shines in the low-end. I have a a $10 pair here that, all
things considered, are probably the best headphones ever made.
Growl, the model number isn't printed on them. Let me try and
find 'em...

I really like the Sennheiser HD 212Pro. Got them at CircuitCity, around 50-60 bucks. Good sound, very good isolation.

***I rather like AKGs... They are in lots of studios and are only
about $100....(a popular model, anyway...)

Thanks to all for the informative thread. I'm thinking of getting
Sennheiser HDR 65 wireless headphones for live monitoring of my MOTU
828MkII mix. At our last gig, I had to sit quite a distance from the
rack carrying my MOTU.
