I'm sorry... but I'm getting "behind the curve" again... :(

Could somebody please illuminate me as to what VST stands for and how
it's used??

Thanks!

VST is a plugin format designed by Steinberg that specifies a standard
interface for software plugins to computer audio sequencing and editing
programs. Initially this was used for effects such as reverbs, delays,
compression, etc., but eventually most of the soft synth companies
supported this format as well. This allows developers independent of
the sequencer/audio providers to create audio processing and generating
tools.

***Hi John!

Thanks for this. Duh... Actually, now my foggy memory reminds me
that I actually *tried* these some time back with Sound Forge for
effects... but I didn't have the fully professional version so they
weren't supported and I also crashed something... I don't remember if
it was Cool Edit or something else... I didn't realize the impact
they would have with softsynths, though, but softsynths were not
quite as common then... a year or two ago...

I wonder what the acronym "VST" means... unless it has something to
do with Steinberg...?

Joe,

John L. was completely on the mark as to the VST plugins; while they originally were audio effects applets, they've more recently been showing up in the guise of software synths as well. Also, many of the synths are now sporting 'stand-alone' modes, so that you can run them as a separate program rather than accessing them as one of any number of tools in an existing application.

Also note that besides VST is another common plugin format, DX (or DXi), which utilizes the DirectX functionality of the Windows platform. I don't know about the reverse, but there are a couple of programs that are 'wrappers' that will wrap around a VST plugin and allow its use in a program designed for DXi plugins.

Yikes, huh?

Take a look at the posting on the shiny new toy that shows software morphing all the way back into a hardware product! Being on the bleeding edge is neither easy nor quiet; it is frequently fun, however.

Cheers,
Jon

***Gheez... in other words the plug-in is an *entire* software
synth...?! I didn't get that... who'd a thunk it. So one would play
it right into a recorder like SoundForge or Sonar or whatever while
the recording application is going? And would it start up
*separately* or from the recording application? Or do I have my head
up my arrears about this...

***Come to think of it... I believe that was the plugin format that I
tried (didn't get too far with it for some reason...crashing for one
thing)

***Yes, I saw this... and thanks for illuminating my confusion...
