For what it's worth... I'm sort of looking for a software synth, and this
morning I visited http://www.microtonalsynthesis.com.
Unfortunately, with Netscape 6.2, that site is totally broken. Works fine
with Internet Explorer... Just seems like HTML-wise the pages don't do much
that needs to be incompatible...

I can't imagine why it's broken with Netscape. The pages are generated
from Adobe Pagemill 3.0 and the HTML code is pretty plain. Could you be
more specific about what is broken?

Hi John ...

> I can't imagine why it's broken with Netscape.

Yeah, I thought it was weird... I looked at the HTML. It's pretty plain.
But the four buttons (A-F, G-M, N-S, T-Z) all do nothing. Clicking on them
has no effect. When you hold the mouse over them, they don't say the name
of the link location the way normal links do. I suspect the image map stuff
doesn't work the same between NS and IE. Instead of using image maps, the
four images could just be images with links...

In other words, the page now has stuff like this:

<map NAME="Microtonal Synthesis A-FMap1">
<area SHAPE="rect" COORDS="0,0,87,72" HREF="micro_af.html">
</map>
<img SRC="Microtonal_Synthesis_A-F.gif" WIDTH="87" HEIGHT="72"
ALIGN="BOTTOM" BORDER="0" NATURALSIZEFLAG="3"
USEMAP="#Microtonal Synthesis A-FMap1" ISMAP>

which could just be a normal link under an image, like this:

<a href="micro_af.html"><img border="1"
src="Microtonal_Synthesis_A-F.gif" width="87" height="72"></a>

***Hi Rick!

Don't tell me you gave up on _Infinity??!_

Well, *I* did, except for having it make "sound effects..."

Hey Joseph!

Yup. Unfortunately, I _DID_ pretty much give up on Infinity. It's really
flexible, but way too hard to use, and I just can't spend my life
"programming" it trying to work up a usable chamber ensemble, or figure out
how to tune it!

The "Midicode" synthesizer on the other hand looks like more my cup of tea.

http://www.midicode.com

I'm on Windows XP, and Midicode doesn't quite work on XP yet, but the
author reports (today) that a new version is forthcoming in a few weeks.
Midicode seems to have several cool facilities... I can't think why I've
never run across it before! It's a multi-timbral 16-channel polyphonic
synth that has good editing capabilities and a dynamite TUNING interface.
It seems about like having two TX802s. On my new 1.8GHz machine, I can run
Midicode full throttle and only chew 75% of the CPU.

BTW, the tuning interface in Midicode really is special. Makes me think
that every tuning student should at least have copy of the Midicode demo.

Isn't anyone else in Tuning Land using the Midicode Synthesizer???

***It really is a problem, since I paid $200 for it! I *did* use it
tonight to make a special sound cue for the new version of _The
Tempest_ that's up an running, using FM modulation, but so far that's
the only use I've found of it at all, regrettably.

best,

Joseph

***I want to thank you, Rick, for turning me on to this. I bought
this right away. At $50+ it's really a good deal, and the tuning
capabilities for experimentation are quite superb.

Besides, he's hooked into several of the microtonalists we know.

This is really a product to support, at a very reasonable price tag!

Thanks for the reference!
