you would probably be interested in some of my
webpages on ancient Greek tuning.

"The measurement of Aristoxenus's Divisions of the Tetrachord"
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/aristoxenus/318tet.htm

(the Aristoxenus page is a real mess, and in serious need
of editing, but if you can find your way thru the confusion,
i think you'll find much of interest. the most important
sections are my translation of a portion of Aristoxenus's
Greek about 2/5 of the way down the page, and the big diagram
about 4/5 of the way down.)

you'll see here that my interpretation of Aristoxenus's
_enharmonic genos_ has a slightly different tuning than
the "standard" interpretation which you used. :)

"Tutorial on ancient Greek Tetrachord-theory"
http://www.ixpres.com/interval/monzo/aristoxenus/tutorial.htm

explains some of the arcane terminology used in Greek theory.

i've also posted quite a bit to the tuning list about
ancient Greek tuning-theory; here's one example:

Lately I've been unable to download anything from mp3.com. Does anyone else have this problem?

Gene,

Hmmm. I actually downloaded Panos' piece from mp3.com so I could upload it to microtonal.org. Other than that (with no problems) I haven't been there recently. Anybody else?

Cheers,
Jon

***It seems as though the "streaming" function is getting interrupted
about 1/3 the way through a song. Somethings things like that happen
with them. I've know the "streaming" to be down as long as a full
day.

BTW John Starrett put up the "enhanced" version of _Blect_ and it
really *does* sound quite a bit better. Thanks to everybody for the
suggestions! It "appeared" in less that I week, I think:

Hi Monzo
Congratulations for your work on the survivor information about
music.I visit your links about Aristoxenos and realy is very
interest.I am not expert in mathematics and I can not decide about
your work but it's truth that Aristoxenos never used any mathematics
in his theory. The language of mathematics is diaphanous and sure the
Pythagoreans theory is more clearly. But in Aristoxenos book you can
find many interesting rules like that:
[1.26] The point of lichanos is numberless.
[2.54] From each step of the scale you must have the distance of
diatessaron (4th) or diapente (5th) otherwise you don't have the
element of harmony.
[3.61]About "sinimena" and "diazegmena".The added tone on 4th between
tetrachords (diazegmena)is not change the genus.
I think many of these works very well when you make microtonal music.
Regards
Panos
