i love using meters of 7, 11, 13, and other primes.
the fact that they can't be evenly divided creates an
asymmetry that i really like.

and noting Graham's statement, my introduction to these
unusual meters was thru my love for Bulgarian folk music
(not the Bulgarian Women's Choir, but the real deal, recorded
in the villages back in the 1950s -- altho the BWC uses
strange meters like this too).

i overheard a ritual in mexico once. the music consisted of
a two bar melody repeated over and over (lines are two
beats, dots one; the phrase starts on the colon, and the
first and last longs in the bars are rests):

_ : _ . _ . _ I-IV
_ : _ . _ . _ V-I

it was a bit difficult to analyse because on of the
drummers, probably not caring much about the melody, kept
missing the two longs. the ceremony must have continued off
site, when all the players got in their cars and drove home;
i dont't know if it was successful in the house of that
drummer.

expeditious manner, the facts of my case which would allow you to ascertain
exactly what I mean.

let me tell you what you should have meant:

chiapas. i wouldn't be able to remember the name of the
village if i tried forever, but it's famous. one of your
former presidents went to a witch doctor there.

i saw another ceremony in mexico city in front of the
cathedral of the virgen de guadelupe which was much more
impressive optically as it had dancers and two guys with
whips to make them dance (a devil and a slave driver). the
music was in a regular 12/8 but didn't stick in my head the
way the 11/8 did, although this also consisted of two bars
only and went on for hours (days?). every once in a while,
they had to exchange the drummer while the fiddle player, an
old guy, stayed and stayed and stayed and played and played
and played. i asked what this was all about and got an
answer, but again i'd never heard the place name where they
came from and forgot it immediately. their object was to get
rain there.

back to chiapas: i was lucky to witness the first concert of
indigenous music there, organized by a doctor who felt this
part of the culture had to be made better known. there was a
trio of harp, guitar (or rather a 12-string cuatro), and
fiddle. they played a medley of tunes, none of which were in
strange meters, but all of them had this 2-bar structure.
for the concert situation, they played one tune for a while
and then segued into the next. still, i think there was even
a pause.

Klaus,

look what you've done!

Had you replied earlier, we would have not only known what you meant, but we
would have known what "they" meant.

Saving us all from the torture of not knowing what we, or us, or they,
meant.

Do you know what I mean?

I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts, that down in Chiapas, they know what we
mean.
