Flaming, Carl Lumma, etc

Hi all,

Cameron recently posted a very on-topic discussion here:

/tuning/topicId_97847.html#97847

This discussion spontaneously deteriorated, as discussions are apt to do on this forum, about All Of The Wrong Things That Carl Lumma Has Ever Done. This is completely unacceptable.

After an initial inflammatory post from Cam, and then an inflammatory response from Carl, and then a further inflammatory response from Michael S about the inflammatory response from Carl, which I assume will lead to further inflammatory responses about Carl and/or Cam and possible random things like Harmonic Entropy. I have deleted the whole lot of the posts.

It is ridiculous that we cannot have a simple discussion about math on this forum without the entire thing degenerating into a flamewar about Carl Lumma, who has been fairly inactive recently. Carl is not the tuning list, and every single discussion that we have does not need to get into how this one time he shut someone down for having some theory at one point.

Stuff like this hinders productivity, and furthermore it has nothing to do with tuning. Any further ridiculous nonsense like this will be met with people being put on moderation.

Thank you.
-Mike

Did you delete anything with actual content? If you insist on doing this when things haven't yet gotten out of hand and there is actual content involved, you should edit the posts and note that this is what you have done.

No, I didn't delete anything with actual content. I wouldn't do that.

Mike,
Your handling of this situation has not be great. You mention
me at least seven times in your message but I am not the problem.
The problem was Cameron, his piss-poor attitude and his
recalcitrant use of words like "sophistry". Cameron: future use
of this word here will result in you and and any pseudonym you
create being banned.

Our e-mail subscribers have now seen this twice. I'm sorry
about that.

I should also add that this is coming after a bit of offlist
discussion with various people over it, and so there was a bit of
impetus to nip it in the bud.

I didn't mean to imply that you are the problem. If anything, I am
trying to stick up for you by asserting that people can't randomly
bring up disagreements they've had with you in every random thread,
which as I noted is doubly absurd when you are in periods of relative
inactivity. Cameron was the aggressor here, and I didn't mean to
suggest otherwise.

I don't what it has to do with me at all. Anybody saying
'and don't let so-and-so misdirect you with their sophistry'
should be just gone the 2nd time they do it. Nothing like
that would tolerated for a second on any other mailing list
or forum I can think of! It's completely ridiculous. The
only reason to bring me up is because I'm the guy who's
confronted it in the past. I'll continue to do so, because
tolerance of such behavior is ultimately the cause of the
breakdowns you mention. But I'd rather moderators do it,
because that's their job. -Carl
