I had someone offer me a ukelin. Since it has 32 strings (well, it's missing
one), 16 bowed and 16 plucked (or more likely strummed), and I play violin,
it seems to offer some possibilities, but I don't know if it'd be up my
alley. Any suggestions?

I think my guess was wrong there. Apparently it is often plucked, and it
looks like only 2 of the strings are bowed upon.

Nevermind, I see now, the bow kind of careens between strings. A violin
teacher's worst nightmare.

a bit better than the one I have, but probably doesn't sound much different.

Being played - and this actually seems to be one of the better performances
on youtube.

Cleaner, but simpler and more strummy:

Apparently these instruments are pretty cheap and ubiquitous.
