This group is involved primarily with tuning systems other that 12-tone
equal-tempered, so a question about alternate guitar tunings like open-G or
drop-D is not really what this list is about. However, there are a number
of guitarists on the list, myself included, so you might find some help
here anyway.

I'm not a big Rolling Stones fan, but I am curious why you think it is
necessary to tune other than EADGBE to play "19th Nervous Breakdown". My
recollection is that besides the bass guitar there is a lead guitar playing
a riff and a rhythm guitar playing chords (bar chords?). Which part do you
think needs a non-standard tuning?

This is the second time in the last couple of weeks that there has
been this type of unfortunate confusion caused by the term "alternate
tuning"... for guitarist this is a standard phrase for any open string
tuning other than E A D G B E, but in the context of this list
"alternate tuning" is meant to say something like, "intonation systems
other than the standard twelve tone equal temperament"... so they're
really quite different subjects. But I bet if you look around on
Onelist that you'll be able to find a bunch of guitar or tab egroups
more along the lines of what your interested in.

good luck,
Dan

Reply to Bill:

I am also new to this group. I have just been lurking up until now.
This is indeed a strange group. But, I am starting to get an idea of
what it is all about.
I am replying to you partly because I am a Stones fan from way back.
19th Nervous Breakdown is such a cool song. I know I have figured most
of it out at one time or another. It may take me awhile to figure it
again and write it in tablature. If I can find time I will go back to
"Out of their Heads" and see if I can do it.
There are also some good web sites for Stones tabs if you run a search
under "Rolling Stones tabs".
There is also a guitar tuning known as the Keith Richards tuning. What
you do is take off the lower E string and tune the rest, from low to
high, to GDGBD.
I'm not that sure that "19th" was recorded that way or not.

Good Luck
Chris Cornell

john!
It is my understanding that Keith was big on alt. open string tunings. Almost exclusively
