Hemifamity27 Improvisation

This is a tuning I pulled off of the tuning list recently (the file date is 9/8/2010) - not sure if this is the one Carl translated to .scl format from Gene's scalar format that I said I'd try or not....

In any case this is at real speed and I corrected only a handful of notes - in other words I seemed to get along with the tuning really well. I'm thinking this tuning can support a lot of interesting microtonal music and I'm pleased with the dexterity I played with. Perhaps the hour and half hour sessions on the weighted Yamaha keyboard helped in that respect. (see http://notonlymusic.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=560&start=0 )

Nope, that was a miracle scale.

Do you mean pianoteq 3.5?

yes 3.5 => I've not found a way to the future.

I should point out:

I'm happy with my dexterity being mainly a guitarist :-)

The future is now! You could take all that coolness and autotune the news with it.

Xenharmonicity combined with the familiarity of more 3 than 5, more 5 and 7, and nothing above. Ideal combination for certain purposes; it's a familiar pattern from meantone but this is much more accurate and slightly brightened by sharp fifths. Garibaldi or sensi could be used for that sort of thing also.

I'm not following you Gene. Can you be a bit more direct? I keep getting the
feeling you are criticizing me.

Perhaps you'd like this variant better:

Why? I used hemifamity in a similar way in my piece Choraled; it's just the kind of tuning it is. I think hemifamity rocks, but people using it should not be lead to expect extreme exoticness. Fifths are very low complexity in hemifamity, and hence will be prominent in scales designed to make use of it.

I don't, actually. I'm just an old-fashioned guy in some ways, despite a fairly high weirdness factor in some of my music. I like chords and chord relationships and music built on them, and prefer the tuning to be nearer to just than 12et.

I fell in love with the double rainbow song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX0D4oZwCsA&t=1m30s
and the group behind the whole thing, the Gregory Brothers
http://www.thegregorybrothers.com
(Three brothers and one wife... a good old fashioned family
affair... interestingly one of their autotune the news
tracks was #3 on the iTunes R&B charts recently.)

I first became aware of the meme at burning man, where a rare
day of rain produced a double rainbow. And some DJ had the
song, and here's a video of people singing and dancing to it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2vd-ohvKuU

Apparently, Microsoft has hired the original double rainbow
videographer to make ads for Windows!

The way YouTube can make people like the Double Rainbow Man or Antoine Dodson of Bed Intruder fame famous is truly remarkable. But I gotta say, the Bed Intruder Song remains my favorite.

That was the #3 R&B track I mentioned! -Carl

This is my first post on the list, so please be kind if I'm replying
incorrectly.. :)

I've met Antoine from the Bed Intruder song (I think that was the #3); he
just visited with the Gregory Bros. Wonder what Stockhausen would say about
the proliferation of autotuning?..

Quick OT: Should I reply to these messages using my Yahoo group ID or my
usual email address, or is it personal preference?

Thanks for the help

Hi Dan, pleased to meet ya. It's personal preference whether
to reply by e-mail or via the group website. To reply by e-mail,
I believe you must send from the address you are subscribed under.

Over 20M views on the Dodson song. That's an audience!
Another thing I love is the Bros. encouragement of making
covers, and there are plenty

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dodson+song+cover

This one, recommended by the Bros. themselves, may even be
considered microtonal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42E7lY1kYrM

and it's got over a million views itself. -Carl

Thanks for the info, Carl. Yeah, my friend is Antoine's "manager". That is a
nice cover.

Just so you know what to expect, I'm mostly developing systems around edo19
(I have this habit of writing the letters first, since program variables in
many languages can't begin with a number; hope that isn't too annoying), so
a good amount of info in the list posts will likely be beyond me, but I'm so
glad to be able to read what the music theory experts are saying, to have
access to recordings, to contribute what I develop, and to be able to ask
questions.

Quick OT: Noticed that there seems to be only 17 MB left in the Yahoo group
file space. Is that correct? As a new member, is it okay for me to u/l
files?

why get an account on my site, www.notonlymusic.com  ?

Then you don't have to worry about it.

As long as you own the rights to what you post (and the typical no
p0rn etc.) its not a problem.

If you don't like that - soundcloud and dropbox are both giving space
away for free as well.

Make a folder called DanielNielsen and upload away!

Audio and video should be put elsewhere because of the
pathetic quota Yahoo provides. But images, midi, text,
etc work well.

Kalle just uploaded a 1+MB wav file, which I will ask him
to take down soon.
