Subject: software for pitch analysis

Hi,
does anybody hava a suggestion for Software for the following tasks:

1. Pitch analysis of a given sample with a resolution of <1Hz
2. Pitch (Hz) to Cent calculator

Platforms could be Mac as well as WIN95.
Shareware would be fine.

Reinhard,

I perfer hardware for pitch measurement. I use the following tools to
isolate and measure the pitch of partials in steel bars that I am tuning:

Occiloscope, Frequency Generator + counter, band pass filter, and a notch
filter.

I use the filter to isolate the partials I am interested in measuring, and
the generator and occiloscope to measure the partial. Its more expensive
but far more accurate than I believe software could ever be. The
occiloscope is a nice to have to comfirm visually what you are hearing, but
you could do without it and still get accurate measurements even down to .2
hertz

The following formula used in a spreadsheet (in this case excel 97 for
win95) will yeild cents given the frequency ratio:

Cents= 1200 * LOG (R)/LOG(2)

Where R = the frequency ratio.

Shareware programs like Detlev Folkmer's
Tune!It or Greg Phillip's Wind Chime Designer are similar to portable
tuning devices. (BTW, I have never gotten the latter to drive my sound
card-- has anyone else tried it with any success?)>>>

Daniel,

Yes, I have gotten chime to work. You need a soundblaster compatible card
and the help file describes the parameters required in the autoexec.bat
file. I have used the program to tune chimes, although its usefullness is
limited by the lack of tuning accuracy in sound cards. You can use the "pc
speaker" output which is quite unpleasant to listen to (but very accurate),
and lacks the ability to sound multiple notes simultaneously.

It has a few quirky bugs, so if you get it working and want to use it,
please contact me.
