For anyone who might be interested here, my wife and I had a son, Oskar Ives Stearns, this past Tuesday:

Congratulations to you and your wife on Oskar!

One of the photographs includes a sign showing
the time of birth as 8:52 p.m., a fine hour.

If I read that musically, then 852 cents is
very close to a just 18/11, one of the ratios
in Zalzal's tuning of what would later be
called Rast, as reported by al-Farabi.

And that's one fine example of many in
Near Eastern music of modes with _three_
step sizes, a pattern I sometimes call a
TOS or "Threefold Order of Symmetry."

Remember sometime maybe around late
2000 or early 2001, when we discussed
a general theory of scales with n step
sizes?
