Tuning Question - JI Growl?

Here is a truly n00b question.

I would like to experiment with a tuning that is capable of getting the "JI Growl" or "roughness or whatever the proper term is. I have heard music that had this sound but so far have not been able to reproduce it.

And in addition - is there a particular register that is best to try it in.

And help - such as pointing to a tuning in the scala archive or posting something here would be much appreciated.

Can you give some examples of music that has this "growl"? I'm thinking you're talking about "periodicity buzz" (I think I read someone use that term once, not sure if there's a better term for it), the phenomenon that occurs when a harmonic timbre plays a simple JI ratio and all the harmonics of the two notes "lock in" real solid. But I want to be sure I know what you're talking about before I send you off on a scalar goose-chase.

I assumed he was. Play a 4:6:7:9:11 chord on the G below
middle C, with some mild distortion, and you'll get it alright.
Jon Catler made it famous. His current project, Willie McBlind,
is like, all that.

Thanks Carl!

I intend to try it later today.

Ack!

I'm wrestling with scala trying to figure out how to generate a tuning that
will allow me to play that. BUT the effort has not been in vain as I found a
nice tuning using the Harmonic function in scala

0: 1/1 0.000 unison, perfect prime
1: 5/4 386.314 major third
2: 3/2 701.955 perfect fifth
3: 7/4 968.826 harmonic seventh
4: 2/1 1200.000 octave
5: 9/4 1403.910 major ninth
6: 5/2 1586.314 major 10th
7: 11/4 1751.318 undecimal semi-augmented fourth +1
octave
8: 3/1 1901.955 perfect 12th
9: 13/4 2040.528 tridecimal neutral sixth +1 octave
10: 7/2 2168.826 harmonic 14th
11: 15/4 2288.269 classic major 14th
12: 4/1 2400.000 2 octaves

It maps oddly into pianoteq though. For one I ended up with only about 4
octaves.

I have nothing to show the public from this experiment, at least not yet.

Any scala hints would be welcome.

Thanks,

Chris

Not that I know of Kraig. It was a mp3 I heard on the tuning list and it
sounded like a growl - and yes, when I asked about I was told it was the
periodicity buzz - I just forgot that term.

The Velvet Underground was into JI?

I did not realize this. I don't see Tony Conrad as a member in wikipedia but
that is not always right.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Conrad
has a different story about his involvement with the velvet.
i hadn't heard this one. Conrad i think might have stated other wise.
I deleted the line there where it said he came up with the names used by most Just intonation practitioners for the intervals.
