As a small example of Bill's inventiveness and generosity, I've scanned one
of his letters, describing the construction of a "transfer harp" and a
redwood gambang.

It's hard to imagine the stretch from Aptos to Santa Cruz without Bill
hiking along from the house on the hill all the way into town to do some
early morning shopping. His constant punning (just imagine the opportunity
afforded him by simply ordering meatloaf at the Hof Brau Haus in Berkeley!)
will not be forgotten.

Most of all, it is Messrs Harrison and Colvig together that we will miss.
They formed a partnership like a pair of twin stars, and approaching their
gravitational field was every bit as wild. Their enthusiasms (tunings,
instrument building, gamelan, puppetry) became the shared concerns of more
than one generation of young west coast composers, and have now reached well
around the planet.

Bill, wherever you're wandering now, be confident that our thoughts are now
with Lou.
