Tuners,

I haven't posted any of my work in a while. I also haven't kept up with Tuning-L much at all lately (most of my activity has been at Facebook lately), so I need to peruse the archives and get involved in something. But I do have a couple things from the "soundtrack":

http://dannywier.ucoz.com/lenfer_vert.mp3

Again, both use 72-edo. The first is in conventional A natural minor, but uses notes from 19-tone Magic temperament, i.e. minor seconds of 133.33 cents and major seconds of 183.33. The tutti string part towards the end I left in 12-equal, but I should retune that--keep in mind the harp is also in 12-equal.

The second is more atonal, uses time signatures like 17/8, 19/8 and 23/8, and so far, unfinished. I'm approximating 17-limit more-or-less randomly. The timpani are tuned to G-Ab+-C-D-Eb+-G, or about 1/1, 13/12, 4/3, 3/2, 13/8, 2/1.

I got some more work in my head; might take a while to get it all in MIDI format. I've also recently discovered the work of Brian Ferneyhough, so it might get crazy if I mine his ideas.

~D.

Really liked the second one...it's tense but not out-of-control tense and a lot of those brass and string stabs sound downright epic. Plus it all sounds cohesive enough I think it would make it past even "strict" non-micro-tonalists' ear drums well...it balances "on the edge" without ever falling off. Very nice work, Dan. :-)

Danny,

This sounds like A+ grade movie music - especially the second one.

What do you use as your sound source? Excellent work!

Wonderful, sublime musics brother Danny! There is always something
delectably eerie, which I like very much, in your orchestral works. We
must see you complete the Dies Irae Symphony!

Thanks for the feedback, and I'll answer everyone at once here.

I'm aiming for the "middle path" again, trying to be as atonal, microtonal and irregular as possible while not sounding chaotic (too much). I do have a potential movie or video game in mind for "L'enfer vert", but this could stand on its own.

This "symphony" (which is hardly in the classical form thereof) may never be finished. I might keep adding to it until I drop dead. I probably should call it a suite, or just a collection of works.

And I've been using almost all free software for almost everything, except for Noteworthy Composer, which is shareware. Sounds come from the GeneraUser GS soundfont or a Roland synth I got years ago.
