Taking action or complaining (was MERGERS AND MICROTONES)

Instead of making nasty generalizations about tastes and money, instead of
complaining that good art isn't commercial, instead of acting superior
because of your lack of success, I suggest that you 1) create something
that you value and that you think might be of value to other people, 2)
find your audience (it doesn't have to be EVERYBODY for you to be
successful), and 3) have a great time doing it.

P.S. My CD release party this Saturday night looks like it's going to be a
great success. Contact me privately if you'd like to join in the
festivities.

I really don't want to start an uproar over any of this, as different
people are naturally going to have different (and sometimes
conflicting) opinions, and I really do respect John voicing his here,
but I do feel somewhat compelled to point out on Neil Haverstick's
behalf that he has done quite a bit to promote the cause of
microtonality (and in particular 19-tET) himself through concretizing,
recording and releasing his music (he has released three of his own
CD's, and organized and saw through the tuning forum compilation CD),
and writing books (he has written a nineteen tone introductory book,
_19 TONES: A NEW BEGINNING_).

Earlier I wrote,

>through concretizing, recording and releasing his music

Ah, the things that can happen when a non-word meets the spellchecker
in a quick post(!)... "concertizing" is what I meant to write...

sorry,
Dan

I'm not familiar with Neil's work but I applaud him for all of it. I
intentionally did not direct my suggestions to anyone in particular because
my guess is that those who have written the sort of communication to which
I was referrring (complaining, etc.) have already been doing what I was
suggesting. If my communication seemed cavalier it was probably because
I'm having a great time getting my CD out, I'm in the midst of the final
preparations for Saturday's party, and I'm tired of hearing artists (as
well as my fellow practitioners of the Feldenkrais Method) complain about
how tough things are. Please know also that I've done my share of
complaining, both with regard to the difficulty of finding a place in the
world for my music and about maintaining a practice as a Feldenkrais
practitioner. I'm on a roll right now and hope that I can serve as a source
of inspiration for others to go after what they want.

And I doubt anyone would complain about that! (BTW, non-word may be a
nonword, but concertizing is only a nonentity of the evil, evil
spellchecker...)
