Ethno 2 user tuning assistance

When I drag my tuning to the Ethno 2 tuning window (as instructed) it appears there. But the scale isn't quite accurately in tune. It bears some resemblance, but that's all.

When I drag my keyboard mapping into the Ethno 2 tuning window instead of using the presets, the Ethno 2 simply becomes silent.

These two files work with the Pianoteq 3, so what needs to be done to make them work with the Ethno 2?

Any help would be appreciated.

Put your .scl and .kbd into the appropriate folders located with the program, (C:program files/MOTU/user presets or something like that)
They'll show up in the drop boxes on the Ethno2 interface.

There remains a bug on Windows- it will fail to name your .kbd. For example it'll say "0" rather than your user .kbd name. But the .kbd remains loaded, so this doesn't affect the performance.

Bingo!

Shortest thread, ever!

Thanks, cameron.

I wonder why the directions have you drag and drop the files directly to the Ethno 2 tuning windows?

Oh well, this works. That's all that matters.

Alas, I was too hasty.

It sees the files in the Tuning > User Presets sections, and the scale (36 note 11-limit Just) is close, but the upper register is all wrong.

Also, while the keyboard map shows up in Tuning > User Presets, it won't use it. It reverts back to 12-tones. This wouldn't be a problem, but the tuning base is wrong.

However, I can drag and drop the k map directly to the Ethno 2 tuning window, and the name appears there, but the Ethno 2 goes silent.

So, it doesn't like the keyboard map, and it's not doing the tuning accurately.

Again, the tuning is 100% accurate in PianoTeq, and the keyboard map works there, too.

Maybe this thread will be a little longer.

Yeah, OS X v. 10.6.3 running on Intel Core 2 Duo.

fwiw, Logic Pro 8 is also very buggy. I can't even figure out how to get it to remap Midi channels right--this is after using it for a few months.

dern compooters. I wish I sang better, I could just make music the old-fashioned way.

(Well, if I can't figure it out, I'll just write the next piece for PianoTeq and Logic, with Ethno 2 in a minor supporting role. The next piece is going to be microtonal even if I have to pitch-bend every note individually. I'm determined. Not confident, but determined.)

Hi Caleb and Cameron,

I want to know one thing : did you (and any of the Ethno2 users) downloaded the update ?
What Cameron describes seems to be what is possible with the update :
> Put your .scl and .kbd into the appropriate folders located with > the program, (C:program files/MOTU/user presets or something like > that)
> They'll show up in the drop boxes on the Ethno2 interface.

But I haven't done the update, I'm on Mac too (10.4.11) and I never had a problem with drag'n'droping scala files directly on the tuning menu for 12 notes/octave tunings, even while playing.
If the tuning base is wrong, you're the first one to report that and it seems likely to be a wrong interpretation of the scala file. My Ethno2 reads correctly all scl files I give him that way. Perhaps you should check first if it works correctly with other various scl files, of 12 or 24 tones.
About the user mappings, they were not working before the update and I dont know if they work after the update.
May be someone knows ?

Thanks, Jacques, that reassures me, and I'll try the update.

By the way, I've heard some music by you that sounded *amazing*, but I had a computer meltdown a few months back and lost my file with links.

I did download Ethno 2.0.1 and I can report it fixes the bug about loading my own scala files
(at least on the stand alone version. I still have to try out the AU plug in).

I've also downloaded 2.0.1, and it does appear to work with the 36-pitch tuning I've used a lot, although it starts it on G2, for some reason.

It sounds pretty accurate. (I'm not going to make the same incautious remark and say it's 100% accurate, this time.)

One quirk seems to be that if you enter, say '6' in pitch bend, it bends the notes up by 6 but down by only 5.

(Is that just me or my MIDI controller?)

It appears that I can adjust the tuning base to anything I need with the 'Semi' and 'Fine' tune knobs.

If those knobs can be automated in Logic, that would be a wonderful thing.

However, unlike Pianotech or Melodyne, Logic is not showing the Ethno 2 in the I/O > AU Instruments > section.

How do I get Logic to recognize Ethno 2 as a plug-in?

A look at both manuals yields no clues.

That's encouraging news ! How you do that ? Does it recognizes it as a 36 tones mapping ? or does it requires to enter a special kbm file to have it ?

It is sold to be working with Logic. If you followed the manual p.28-30 and it does'nt, you should ask the technical support (you have to sign in to do that).
One thing I found myself with ProTools is that, on the contrary to what the manual says, Ethno was not recognized as long as I created mono instrument tracks ; I created a stereo instrument track and Ethno was there.

Great to hear that. What instruments are you using, if I may ask?

Some Ethno2 settings can be automated with MIDI CCs. See the Ethno2

Sorry, cannot help you there. I can only mention that I am using it as
a VST plugin in Cubase, that works fine.

Thanks, Jacques. It appears that I will have to contact technical support. It doesn't recognize my mapping, yet--which would begin the scale on an A--but it does seem to be more or less in tune using the Spanish guitar...

More, if you're interested:

I've looked closely at the MOTU manual. The MOTU Ethno Instrument.component is on my hard drive in Library > Plug-Ins > Components just like it should be. It is version 2.0.1 if I command-I it.

However, If I start Logic Pro, and, following the manual, create an audio instrument track (stereo), MOTU is not listed under Inserts > Audio Units.

(Apple, Audiowish, Celemony, Izotope *are* listed there.)

If I proceed as with the Pianoteq and create a software instrument, it doesn't show up under I/O > AU instruments. Modartt *does* show up there, as well as Celemony.

There are only three kinds of tracks: software, audio, and midi. It doesn't seem to work if I create any of these three, and it doesn't show up under any of the relevant buttons.

I've reached a dead end with things to try, so I will contact tech support.

Thank you, I will check that out.

BTW: I just came across the Indian harmonium, which works well for me :)

I got a clue from the MOTU website.

Logic scans the plug-ins and validates them.

Probably, I have to download some updated ILok driver, because Logic doesn't recognize the Ethno 2 plug-in.

As usual, it's absurdly complicated and related to security. This is my beef with computers these days.

When I go to Logic's Audio Unit Manager, the Ethno shows up as 'not yet validated'.

Pardon me for being annoyed. I bought a legit product, and followed the instructions.

You have to rescan it in the Audio Unit Manager.

There, now it's 'successfully validated'.

That's really bogus.

One little addition.

The MOTU manual appears to be slightly wrong.

On page 29, it instructs you to create an 'audio instrument' track in Logic.

Actually, it only works if you create a 'software instrument' track, so far.

I also downloaded the update and have so far only experienced the strange failure to remember the name of the user preset .kbm- even though the preset mapping is loaded! Strange but no big deal.

As far as the tuning of the instruments, I haven't had problems so far, but I haven't tried all the instruments.
