need help with .wav or .mp3

Ok... I admit it. I need help with this and am just starting out.

Basically I have been able to run my sequencer through the TX81Z with a
microtonal setup and simultaneously redirect it into my sound card. Then
with the simple "sound recorder" utility that comes with Windows, I have
been able to simultaneously make a short recording of the piece in .wav
format as the sequencer is playing it.

It seemed to come out pretty well, but the "sound recorder" is SO
limited... it only records 1 minute of music!!

I'm sure you guys know *exactly* what to use and do about all this... Is
there a utility I should be running to make .wav files, or should I get a
.mp3 recorder that will work with the sound card??

I seem to be getting a pretty nice input into my sound card...

Are there freeware or shareware utilities that will record .wav or .mp3s
let's say 5-7 minutes in length??

OR, do I have to purchase software to do this??

I was "poking around" the MP3 software site, and saw lots of stuff, but I
don't have the vaguest idea what I should be looking at... I saw the
"encoders" that were mentioned before, but I believe they are mostly
"conversion" utilities. I note that "Real Jukebox" is a great playback
software, but doesn't allow RECORDING of .wav(s) or .mp3(s).

I know this is bad... but I have to start somewhere, and I'm going to be
"fearless" about it.

Please keep in mind, if you can explain this, that I know virtually
*nothing* about this arena (maybe not so much about other arenas either,
but that's another story - problem...)

THANKS!!!

Joseph,

I use Cakewalk proaudio 9.0 (pricey) to do what you describe. Check out
www.sonicspot.com for lots of great audio/midi free/shareware.

"CoolEdit 96" from syntrillium.com is available on the web as a demo-ware,
and is only $40 or so for full version. The demo can record as much as you
like.

You can use MPEGSuite, also share/demo-ware, to turn your WAV files from
CoolEdit into mp3 files.
