The Music of Ben Johnston: A New Dissonance Blog

Dear all,

The blog at http://newdissonance.com/ is promoting the music of Ben Johnston, and I don't know whether it has been mentioned here before. For example, there are video and audio streams of performances available, including a performance of Quintet for Groups from the Donaueschingen Festival, and rehearsals of the Kepler Quartet practising Johnston's 10th quartet for an upcoming CD together with the composer.

Along these lines...

Kyle Gann was the keynote speaker at Franklin's recent Johnston gathering. From his blog, I'd recommend both the keynote speech:

... as well as his thoughts on Johnston's Seventh Quartet:

For the Johnstonista, this is good stuff gathering.

Cheers,
Jon

Thank you for this pointer. For others, there is also a MIDI-version (piano timbre)

Carl and Ozan,
Thank you both for the very kind comments.
I hope I might mention that my recording of Ben Johnston's Toccata and his Three Pieces for Two Cellos (transcription of his Three Pieces for Two Violins) are on a Cd of mine that has just come out, The New Cello, Vol. 1: American Composers, on Centaur records (CRC 2994). Also on the Cd are Elliott Carter's Figment 1 and 2, Stuart Smith's Willow and Said, Nearly, and my Clairvoyance (in 24-edo) and Recoil (in 72-edo).
By the way,  the Kepler Quartet's project to record all of Ben Johnston's quartets could really use  support.  If any of you are interested in helping this group record the remainder of these extraordinary pieces, I hope you will consider making a contribution of some kind.  Their web site is:  http://keplerquartet.com/fundraising/.

best
Franklin
