I'm a very amateur guitar player and I have been trying to expand my playing
abilities.

I stumbled across your "mailing list" and thought that it sounded wonderful.
I assumed it was a possibility that I could become enlightened via your
discussions about tunings...

Alas...

Your depth and passion on the subject is incredible.... and waaaay over my
head.

All I hoped to learn was the mystery of how a dropped-d tuning could be
achieved and likewise tuning the individual strings for the different sounds
(ie like the Ani DiFranco tunings).

Does anyone have any idea where I can find any decent sites on the how to
and why of guitar tuning for beginners??

I would appreciate any info that anyone has!

Thanks!!!!

Ange.

A dropped-D tuning is the standard tuning with the sixth string dropped
down to D: D A D G B E

Here are two common open tunings:

Open D: D A D F# A D

Open G: D G D G B D

Here's one that as far as I know has been used only by myself to play the
piano part on the song "Colour My World" by Chicago:

Open A major 7th: E A C# E G# E

Here's one that I use on the CD mentioned at the end of my message on
"Pfrancing" by Miles Davis":

Raised F: F A D G B E

Here's one that I used on "Bless This House" on my CD during the section in
Eb but not the section in C:

Dropped Eb: Eb A D G B E

Good luck!

Angela -

Welcome to the list.
This is a great prickly list.

You will learn something.
Now, back to your homework...

Sonic Youth has a great tuning that is the Pentatonic scale, starting with
E. I got these real weird Major/minor songs when I played. Sounded like the
Cocteau Twins if they had come from Kansas.

Go ahead and imagine that.

Thank you to everyone for being so kind.

I think I understand what you have all shared so far.

I am able to tune a guitar by ear to the point where it is roughly in tune
(standard tuning) - I test myself with my guitar tuner after I have had a go
at tuning from scratch to see how close I got.

From what I gather, if I want to tune the top string down, I can easily tune
the top sting to the d string (ie 3rd string?) or as someone suggested pick
the note from the fret below... sound right???

I have another question about when a "song is in C#m" for instance and they
say to just place the capo on the 6th fret. Is that just removing the need
for tuning each of the strings into that key?

Or am I drowning slowly......?????

I also ventured on my lunch break to my favourite music shop and found some
really good books on alternate tunings. The guy there assures me that my
guitar tuner will pick up the note no matter which string I am tuning.... I
think this has been my biggest fear.... making a hash of the tunings and
playing something waaaay out of tune!

So, tonight my homework is to attempt "John Henry" in the tuning you gave
me. I will see how I go and report back!!!

Thanks again everyone!!!

Ange.
