53-tone equal temperament

I think I misread Barbour (whose language is a bit unclear) and it was
Pythagorean tuning, not 53-tET, that was confirmed as the official scale in
China in 1713. Anyone know for sure?

Also, the 53-tone system is the standard for Turkish music theory, though
this is usually regarded as a 53-tone Pythagorean chain. Anyone know of any
theorists who identify the Turkish system with 53-tone equal temperament?
