I am very interested in the whole Johnny Reinhard, Daniel Wolf
"controversy" concerning Andreas Werkmeister.

According to what I am understanding, Werkmeister was starting to think
about advocating equal temperament, but actually was using something else,
with the thirds closer to meantone, ie. a kind of "well temperament."

In this case, the "conventional knowledge" of the definitions in such
publications as the Harvard Dictionary of Music are not quite correct:

[Willi Apel, Harvard Dictionary on "temperament:"]

"Equal temperament is usually said to have been invented by Andreas
Werckmeister c. 1700..."

Nicht wahr??

The only true part may be the "usually said to have been", subsequent
scholarship has corrected this, although exactly who the inventor was
remains unclear. Barbour simultaneously proposed Lanfranco (1533) and Ho
Tcheng-thyen (ca. 400 a.d.).

No, it's A.D; viz. Partch and Barbour.
