A candidate for Eurovision in 12-tone subset of Yarman-36

🔗Ozan Yarman <ozanyarman@...>

Dear members,

I am slowly returning back to composing at long last. Here is a link
to a yet unfinished attempt on my part to enter the Eurovision song
contest:

http://www.ozanyarman.com/misc/supertrance.mp3

The tuning of this trance song is set to the 12-tone Temperament
Ordinaire subset of Yarman-36 with the diapason at 438.4 Hz.

The piece is still very fresh... baked in Logic Pro 8 just today.

Please share your thoughts. Do you like it?

Cordially,
Oz.

Sounding good Oz;

Sufficiently Euro to avoid scaring away the Eurocentrics, yet with a
touch of "Eastern" promise.

Unfortunately Eurovision has become more and more "visual" as it has
progressed.

I am glad to hear that you are getting into and enjoying Logic.

Turkey has a good recent history of success at Eurovision.

Thank you Charles,

You know that Turkiye is very much anticipating recognition in even
the Eurovision. Having tasted the glory of first place with Sertab
Erener, Turkiye's rising starlets are hungry for the chance at the
grand prize once again.

I thought I could get one of these starlets to use my music. The music
is progressing nicely. All that remains is lyrics with great feeling.

Oz.

Ozan,

Glad to hear you are composing again. I enjoyed this a lot! Very well
produced with interesting timbres and a rich sound-field. Good
headphone listening---that's how I do most of my listening!

Good luck with the contest.

I was also enjoying the fine qunan pieces on your site....

Best,
AKJ

Dear Aaron, thank you for your kind words. It is needless to mention
that I also appreciate your music very much.

I have finished and digitally mastered the Super-Trance song. Here it
is:

http://www.ozanyarman.com/files/music/supertrance_finalmix.mp3

To avoid clipping, I spent a lot of time fixing channel volumes and
calibrating the master gain. Is the volume of the song loud enough?

Cordially,
Oz.

Sounds good, even was praised by my supercritical Brit/US 17 year-old
son.

The volume is fine.

If you are doubtful you could always normalise it.

I found that I could get about another 7dB by normalising the mp3
using Fission from Rogue Ameoba.

This is a side of you I haven't heard yet! I'm not quite as familar with trance (or Eurovision), but this is impressive.

And welcome back to composing.

Oz,

The melodies/harmonies are great - however the percussion, in my humble
opinion, could use more liveliness. My impression is of clockwork and not
human play in the 2nd half.

With respect,

Dear brother Danny, thank you for your praise. Glad you enjoyed the
piece.

You know that I applaud your wonderful great orchestral "sountrack

are more gems in your web corner where that one came from.

Keep up the good work as always!

Dear Charles, thanks!

I don't know how I can increase the volume without causing audio
clipping. Though I discovered that that does not always result in
distortion, or at least it is undetectable. I'm somewhat inexperienced
with this digital mastering ordeal. I don't even know yet what
compressor and limiter exactly accomplishes unless I hear the results.

What is this Fission you talk about? Is it Mac related?

I think I will try a Lucytuned version of supertrance when I can get
my hands to it.

Oz.

Thanks for the comments Chris! In Logic, I am only capable of sticking
in loops from the sound library as yet. I am not the person to meddle
with the art of pro-drumming any time soon. In case there is a chance
of real performance, maybe the drum parts can be recorded live by
those who know best.

The funky drum you hear was a set of loops called "Trip Hop Shaman Beat". Catchy and rather Turkish too.

I'll try to improve the drums even with my limited abilities. I'll see
what I can do.

Cordially,
Oz.

I suspect that you need to RTFM. There are more than 1000 pages in the
Logic manuals, but if you search via the pdf files you should be able
to find what you need.

Fission is a Mac application which will quickly load, play and enable
you to edit mp3 and other audio file formats.

You can download it from here:

http://www.rogueamoeba.com/fission/

You could have set the normalisation when you bounced your final mix;
by normalising the track you are increasing the amplitude of all the
audio. The amount that you can increase the amplitude is determined by
the maximum amplitude value that is found in the track. Normalisation
allows you to increase the volume by a set amount so that the loudest
part of the track is at 100% or less of the max volume permissible
without distortion or overdriving the audio file.

Actually I know of a percussionist who might perform for your piece. He has done a lot of authentic Caribbean percussion work and has a large collection of instruments. I can ask if he would be interested in working with you if having American collaborator is not a problem for euro vision.

Thanks for the comments Chris! In Logic, I am only capable of sticking
in loops from the sound library as yet. I am not the person to meddle
with the art of pro-drumming any time soon. In case there is a chance
of real performance, maybe the drum parts can be recorded live by
those who know best.

The funky drum you hear was a set of loops called "Trip Hop Shaman
Beat". Catchy and rather Turkish too.

I'll try to improve the drums even with my limited abilities. I'll see
what I can do.

Cordially,
Oz.

Ozan,

Normalization scales the volue of your audio and makes the peak volume
of any wave file equal to peak digital volume in bit length per
sample, to avoid clipping distortion, yet achieve maximum volume. On
some software (e.g. Audacity) you can choose some other maximum close
to max but just shy, if you want headroom.

Compression and dynamic range 'squash' the dynamic range so that quiet
passages are louder and loud passages are quieter. These days,
opinions vary about how much compression one should ideally use, IMO,
it's often overused these by producers these days. Part of the
motivation for compression comes from broadcast bandwidth. It can also
be helpful for listening in a car cabin, when there is lots of road
noise-it allows for fewer volume dial adjustments.

Dear Chris, much obliged. I will think of your proposition of course.
By the way, I have fortified the percussion, made some changes here
and there, improved the ending, and normalized the audio file. It's a
top-notch recording now. Maybe you will like it this time?

The classic trick used to make something louder without clipping is to
use either a limiter or a "hard" compressor (i.e. one with a high
ratio), as per Aaron's advice. A limiter (sometimes called a
"brickwall" limiter) is actually a compressor with the highest
possible ratio of "Infinity:1". There are probably tons of free AU
limiter plugins out there, if Logic is your DAW of choice. You
probably already have one somewhere.

A quick and dirty way to make your track louder would be to simply
slap one of those brickwall limiter plugins onto your track and boost
the gain of the track before the limiter stage. A lot of
mastering-oriented limiter plugins will have a "pre-gain" knob to do
just this. On the other hand, if you have a more "traditional"
compressor/limiter layout, your approach should be to lower the
threshold to say -10 dB and then increase the output post-limiter gain
by 10 dB to compensate. Feel free to email me offlist if you have any
questions about this process, as it can be kind of a pain at first.

And I like this track! +10 points for the use of the didgeridoo. What
12 note subset did you pick from Yarman-36? It sounded almost like
straight 12-equal at first, but I thought I heard a few differences as
time went on.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the tips and pointers! I've meddled around with the limiter
and compressor plug-ins until I was satisfied with the crash cymbals
and did another final mix. I'm slowly learning the trick of the trade.

I'm glad you liked the piece. The part you identified as didgeridoo is actually a "Trance Space Bass" loop from the Logic library of Loops.

The 12-tone subset of Yarman-36 is actually a 12-tone Temperament
Ordinaire tuned by listening to the whole beat rates of fifths. It is
tuned thusly:

A= 438.41 Hz

A'-E = -1 (narrow fifth beating once per second)
E-B = -2
B'-F# = -1
F#-c# = +1 (wide fifth beating once per second)
C#-G# = +1
G#'-Eb = 0 (pure fifth)

A-D = -2
D-G' = -1
G-C = -1
c-F = -2
F-Bb' = -1
Bb-Eb = -2

Here are the cent values of Yarman-36, with the subset I chose in bold:

0.000
44.008
79.810
97.641
148.237
182.183
198.747
245.696
281.729
303.638
347.408
381.446
396.078
447.688
483.760
501.356
545.281
579.437
594.119
649.322
683.208
699.744
743.808
779.654
801.683
848.163
882.148
896.757
945.733
981.805
1001.880
1045.743
1079.852
1094.514
1149.643
1185.715
1200.000

The differences between this tuning and 12-tET are minute (max. 6
cents) but significant for me nevertheless.

Cordially,
Oz.

O Carl, I have updated the mix several times and taken down the old
mix which you mention. While my skills in digital mastering is quite
below average, I did succeed to amplify the beat and pronounce the
harmonies in this one:

Thanks Oz! A sweet-sounding piece. As others have said, it's
great to hear such versatility from you. Too many musicians
are specialized to a narrow genre.
